Despite initially showcasing an unmatched potential in the league, the San Antonio Spurs have plunged into a disheartening 16-game losing streak. The introduction of the young prodigy Victor Wembanyama came as a catalyst for a franchise revolution. However, the Spurs are now at a dismal 3-18 record for the season, marking their worst start in the entirety of their existence. However, amidst the struggles, Wemby is maintaining a double-double average with 19 points and 10.2 rebounds in the early season.

This heightens concerns about the Spurs’ struggles more than ever, as it suggests that the problem lies somewhere else than Wembanyama. In response to this, Adam Silver personally addressed and alleviated fans’ worries during the NBA In-Season Tournament’s finale.

In his concluding remarks during the pre-game pressers, Adam Silver took a moment to commend Victor Wembanyama. While acknowledging the huge fan following behind the youngster, he shed light on the reality of Wemby’s skills not transpiring into enough wins. However, Silver then highlighted the immense potential the young star possesses. He said, “I know that the Spurs are very encouraged by his play on the floor. Obviously, it’s not represented in wins yet, but he’s a young developing player in this league.”

Despite struggles, Wemby’s hype continues to surge

Contrary to expectations that the Spurs’ losing streak would dampen the hype around Wembanyama, the reality tells a different story. A testament to this is the recent sale of Wemby’s debut jersey, which fetched a staggering record price. Wembanyama’s jersey from the second half of his debut game against the Dallas Mavericks was sold for an astonishing $762,000.

The figure comfortably surpassed the pre-auction estimates of $80,000 to $120,000, setting a record for any NBA debut rookie jersey and ranking among the highest amounts in the modern era.
