The Sacramento Kings are in a tough spot, coming off a 95-122 beatdown by the Indiana Pacers. That loss marks their 4th in a row, putting them at 13-17 for the season. With each defeat, the vibe in Sacramento gets more and more grim. Mike Brown is testing the fans’ patience and everyone else’s as well. After years of coaching turmoil, the Kings finally seemed to have some stability, with Brown at the helm. But is this rocky road getting too rocky now?
It’s been a wild ride since Rick Adelman left in 2006, with 11 different head and interim coaches stepping in over 16 seasons. But Brown broke the curse in 2022-23, snagging NBA Coach of the Year honors while guiding the Kings to their first playoff appearance in 17 years, aka forever. He was rewarded with a contract extension, a three-year deal worth $30 million. It is due to kick in next season.
However, the 54-year-old coach may soon see his stint in Sactown come to an end. The Kings have quite a few superstars, but they still fail to win. So, fans are obviously frustrated with the boss.

Kings fans want Mike Brown terminated, overlooking last season’s performances
One fan tweeted, “I think it’s time to fire Mike Brown. Say what you will about the roster, there is more than enough talent to win games.” The Kings’ roster certainly has the talent to compete at a higher level. With players like De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and Keegan Murray- Sacramento boasts a squad capable of making noise in the Western Conference.
However, Sactown has struggled to convert their talent into victories, sitting at 13-17 after four consecutive losses. This is especially disappointing given the hope and expectations after Brown’s success last season.
“I don’t know if Mike Brown is trying to prove a point to the front office, but giving Keon Ellis a DNP after crying about your team not playing defense and giving effort is just gross. I’m all the way out on Mike Brown,” wrote another fan. Ellis is in the 86th percentile in steal rate and the 88th percentile in block rate—stats that speak volumes about his ability to disrupt opposing offenses.
So why isn’t he using Ellis when the Kings clearly have defensive struggles? All these decisions have turned the fans against Brown.
While Brown brought hope and excitement with his leadership, it now seems to have waned off. “Sad to say, but at this point, i think i agree. love what MB brought here to start his tenure but this is inexcusable man *sad emoji*”, said one netizen.
The Kings had their best offensive season in over a decade, ranking 3rd in offensive efficiency (per NBA Stats) in the 2022-23 season. This level of success sparked real optimism for the team’s future, making it all the more painful when they’re underperforming now…
The Kings’ defense has been a major weak spot, ranking 19th in defensive rating. The inconsistency in their defensive efforts has been a sore point for many fans, especially with Brown’s reputation as a defensive-minded coach.
Financial investments often influence coaching decisions. One user wrote, “MB isn’t going anywhere Vivek just gave him $30 mill.”. Mike Brown’s recent contract extension, worth $30 million over three years, essentially locks him in as the Kings’ head coach for the foreseeable future. This deal, set to start next season, demonstrates the long-term commitment from Kings’ owner Vivek Ranadive, who clearly believes in Brown’s vision and leadership.

Despite the extended contract, the Kings’ current struggles—particularly in defense—have left fans questioning whether Brown can deliver on the promise he showed glimpses of last year.

“Mike brown should have been fired or demoted to an assistant coach this last offseason. The head coach job should have been handed over to jordi,” reacted another fan. Jordi Fernandez, Brown’s ex-top assistant, has garnered attention for his work, particularly for his role in revitalizing the Kings’ offense last season. Could he be a potential future boss for Sacramento?
In contrast, this season, the Kings’ defense has regressed. An offensive-minded assistant like Fernandez might’ve led the team to better results. However, with Brown’s contract extension looming and Sactown’s leadership wholeheartedly backing him, a coaching change seems unlikely in the immediate future.
