Over the last decade or so, LeBron James has been one of the biggest mysteries to solve for Steve Kerr as the head coach of the Warriors. Going head-to-head against him in four straight NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018, Kerr has spent a good portion of his career strategizing to contain the Akron Hammer. But when he finally got a chance to work with LeBron during the Paris Olympics, the six-week experience was enough to turn him into a fan. And that fandom led to Kerr explaining how LeBron might have outdone the 1992 Dream Team with his performance in Paris.

Despite being the oldest player on the roster, LeBron surprised everyone by having the most consistent performances through all six games of the tournament. Averaging 14.2 points, he took care of the offense every game. Moreover, he even made his teammates better by dishing out 8.5 assists on average. Sure enough, he was named the tournament’s MVP after his historic showing. Impressed by his professionalism, skillset and sheer greatness, Steve Kerr couldn’t help but sing praises of the four-time champion, “I’m thrilled to have been able to coach him these last six weeks and I’m a LeBron fan for life.”

Moreover, when asked about what the experience was like watching LeBron, Steph, and KD play on the same team, Kerr made a bold claim about the level of difficulty in this year’s Olympics, “The difference between ’92 and the Dream Team and now is you know it’s hard to win. You know they didn’t have much difficulty back then. But the world has gotten so good at basketball.” As great as the Dream Team was with legends like Jordan and Magic, they only had to go through a handful of NBA players to win gold in Barcelona. Meanwhile, this year’s event had 61 NBA players on opposing teams. “For Steph and Kevin and LeBron to join forces and win a gold medal for their country is pretty spectacular to watch.” Kerr added.

What is the legacy of the 2024 Team USA?

Yes, LeBron James and Co. did not cruise through the tournament with one sided victories like the Dream Team did in Barcelona. But they proved that the Americans still have the best team in the world. With legends like LeBron, Steph, and Durant teaming up for one last hurrah on the international stage, this team will surely go down as one of the greatest to ever do it. When asked what legacy they will leave behind after their win, Steve Kerr said, “I hope that the legacy of this team is to see these superstar players and the emotions and how much it matters to win.”

Despite being in the later stages of their careers, the faces of the league teamed up to seek redemption for their nation after last year’s humiliation at the FIBA World Cup. From Steph making his debut to Durant breaking the scoring record to LeBron becoming to only player with two triple-doubles at the event, Team USA’s performance in the Olympics was a true story of passion. And that’s how they should be remembered. Do you agree?
