“Every coach says, he’s not a lifer and then he turns into a lifer, that’s what I’ve found,” Steve Kerr said jokingly when asked about his time as a Warriors coach. This is what the 59-year-old star coach is all about. A mix of a serious basketball coach and a funny man. And fans get to witness glimpses of it during interviews. Lucky are those who witness it in close quarters.
Even though the Dubs players spend a lot of time around their coach, nothing closer to family. Just like a Warriors fold, Kerr has a lot on his hands at home as well, taking care of two duties: being a loving husband and father to three children. Let’s find out more about the star coach’s family and know more about Kerr as a person. Firstly, let’s start with his college sweetheart, Margo Kerr.

Steve Kerr and Margo met at a graduation school in the 1980s and the two have been together since then. As per sources, it’s said that the couple were college sweethearts at the University of Arizona and tied the knot in 1990. It was during Kerr’s sophomore year in the NBA.
Just like his coaching stint, Kerr had an eventful career as a professional baller. He came into the league as a second-round pick in 1988 and hoped around different franchises before settling in with the Chicago Bulls for a successful 5-season stint. And, luckily it fetched him three rings. And went on to win two more during his stint with the San Antonio Spurs. Nevertheless, before we go deeper into Kerr’s professional life, let’s jump back to his relationship with Margo.
Following his rookie season with the Phoenix Suns, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded him, where he stayed for two seasons. This is when he married Margo. As the saying goes, every successful man has a supporting wife behind him. In Steve Kerr’s marriage, Margo was indeed supportive, but in her own way. It’s hard to go through a loss for a head coach, and it’s no different for Kerr. After a disappointing regular season game loss against the Sacramento Kings, Kerr struggled to sleep, tossing and turning on the bed late at night.
Ideally, a loving partner is expected to comfort but Margo had her ways. In an interview with KNBR, Kerr revealed follow-up, “It’s probably two o’clock in the morning, and Margot wakes up and goes, ‘Jesus, it’s only November. Would you just relax?’ And I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And she goes, ‘All I can hear are these heavy sighs, tossing and turning, just go to sleep.’” Nevertheless, despite their ways, the couple have found their way to construct a happy home with three kids.

Have an interesting take?
Nick Kerr is the Kerr couple’s eldest son and they welcomed him to the world in 1992, during Steve’s Orlando Magic stint. Just like his dad, Nick also developed a liking for basketball at a very young age. Why not, a year after he was born, his dad hung out with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
Following his dad’s footsteps, Nick was clear on one thing. He didn’t want to become his dad. In an interview, he said, “When I was in middle school, high school, college, I was never trying to live up to his legacy. I was trying to be myself, which is good because that’s a hard one to live up to.” Nevertheless, in time, Nick gave up his playing dream and decided to enter coaching.“It’s really fun to stay around the game and influence other players,” noted.
In 2023, he was appointed head coach of the Warriors’ G-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. He delivered an impressive performance, finishing the 2023-24 season with a strong 31-19 record. Despite this success, both he and Steve Kerr faced accusations of nepotism. However, the duo has yet to address the controversy.
However, former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown stood up for the family, saying, “You wouldn’t know that he’s Steve’s son. Never did he take for granted, which he easily could have, who his father was… especially how successful Steve is and everything he touches in life. That selflessness, how humble he is, paid dividends because he’s a hard worker and very, very smart guy.”
Madeleine “Maddy” Kerr (29)
Madeleine is the only daughter in the Kerr household. She was born in 1995. Maddy also showed interest in sports as she picked volleyball in her college. However, things took a turn as she leaned toward reading law. She pursued media studies in 2017 picked up law the next year and ended up becoming an attorney in 2021 after she graduated from Berkeley’s School of Law.

With her social media handles set in private, there isn’t much information about Maddy available. But, we are sure about one thing, Maddy certainly is living her dream. Speaking of her parents in an interview, she added, “My parents are really cool, they’re honestly our best friends.”
Matthew Kerr (26)
The youngest member of the Kerr family, Mathew, was born in 1998. Unlike the other two, he wasn’t anywhere near to sports. But, Madeleine still wanted to draw a parallel, saying, “He’s like my dad, who was an outlier in his family because he was an athlete.” In Mathew’s case, the youngest Kerr turned his head to art and writing.
Nick, speaking of his brother, said, “He’s a very great writer, very artistic… He writes screenplays. He’s real smart, way smarter than the rest of us.” Mathew pursued his interest as he attended USC Film School, learning screenwriting and comedy TV writing. Importantly, he also has his name in the credits roll for his works in Onward, Clone High, and Ted Lasso.

Moreover, speaking of his dad, Matthew added, “He’s always been incredibly supportive, and of my sexuality, and he’s been open about social issues.”
