The ongoing season has seen Steve Kerr become one of the most vocal critics of the NBA’s officiating. He had famously berated the referees’ calls during a Warriors-Houston Rockets matchup back in December by stating, “This is a $1 billion industry. You got’s people’s jobs on the line.” Since then, the team’s situation has only worsened, with each win/loss making the difference between their playoff chances. Therefore, as the situation for the Bay Area franchise deteriorated during the recent game against the Dallas Mavericks, the head coach was unable to keep his cool.
The matchup at the American Airlines Center became a bit more interesting after onlookers captured Steve Kerr arguing with a referee, Gucci Mane, in the middle of the court. The head coach seemed visibly upset, not willing to accept any explanation that was being given to him. After he shouted at Mane, the referee walked away and punished Kerr with a technical!
Even Draymond Green had to assist in pulling back the head coach after his anger seemed to be getting the better of him. Yes, Draymond Green. The same guy whose on-court antics have made him notorious. Imagine that!

Kerr reportedly lost his cool after some questionable foul decisions were made following a four-play sequence in the 3rd quarter. The first play was reportedly a light foul called on Stephen Curry 0.2 seconds before a Mavericks shot clock violation. The same was given when Curry slid into the path of Max Christie with his hands at his side. Then, a foul was called on Jimmy Butler on Kyrie Irving when the latter drove and jumped into Butler. However, that one was also of minimal contact. Later, on an ensuing offensive possession, Irving grabbed Butler, and the ball went out of bounds. However, no foul was called. This gave the Mavericks the chance to score back down on the other end to open the second half with a six-point run!
The next half began with Dallas leading by 57-56. Kyrie Irving’s performance level exploded in that period, as he hit three 3-pointers in 41 seconds. As a result, the Mavericks’ lead stretched by 15 points! The Warriors steadily caught on and closed the gap to 83-78 at the end of the third quarter. Therefore, anything that would hinder that progress would have made Steve Kerr mad. When putting oneself in the Warriors head coach’s shoes, we can understand where he is coming from.
The Golden State Warriors were holding a 27-26 win record before the Mavs matchup. Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks were 28-26. Both teams are neck to neck on the points table, fighting to secure a playoff qualifying seed before time runs out. The emotions would seldom be higher at any other point in the NBA regular season than now.
For Steve Kerr to lose his cool over this speaks volumes. After all, if the coach knew one thing during the early part of the NBA season, it was to know when to control one’s temper.
Despite being upset, Steve Kerr kept his cool against officiating during the NBA Cup game: “Going to choose not to speak”
After the matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies back in November, Steve Kerr was upset for multiple reasons. The Warriors fumbled a big 4th quarter lead. The head coach was upset at referees Brian Forte and Andy Nagy. As 1:47 minutes remained in regulation, Nagy called a technical foul on Draymond Green, who had “screamed” for a traveling violation on the Grizzlies. Instead, a foul was called on Moses Moody. Later, Trayce Jackson-Davis was fouled, and Kerr received a technical foul from Forte! After some time had passed, Forte handed Green another technical foul, which led to the power forward’s ejection. All this would have raised anticipation over what Steve Kerr would say during the post-game presser. However, the ‘Angry Kerr’ mode did not make an appearance during the early part of the season.

To go from that to arguing with referee Gucci Mane during the recent game, one can notice how much Steve Kerr has grown to be frustrated with the officiating. With the Mavericks securing the win by a 111-107 score, the head coach’s disappointment will not go away anytime soon.
