The slow decimation of one of the most prolific NBA dynasties wasn’t ever on the cards. However, last season the Warriors and Klay Thompson reached a threshold where recovery was impossible. The revered sharpshooter’s game began to wane. By statistics and his demeanor, too, it was his worst season. Coming off two major injuries and struggling to get into rhythm had its effects. As the season matured, his contract talks became a focus point. However, as much as the Warriors were willing, the man himself wasn’t happy.
It was a talking point in his introductory Mavericks conference, during which the hooper went all philosophical and admitted, “Sometimes change can spur greatness, and a new change of scenery can do wonders,” the mild smirk on his face while saying this conveyed a lot more than what was said. Even Steve Kerr felt the inevitable. “Yeah, there were signs,” the 9x champion admitted.
The reasons for him ultimately leaving pointed straight at the fact. According to Joe Lacob, Thompson had a much more lucrative offer on the table when the season began. And once his camp refused, no other negotiations took place. He wound up choosing a 3-year $50 million contract with Dallas, signaling a “fresh new start.” But if it was in Steve Kerr’s hands, “I wanted Klay to be a Warrior for life.”

“It felt like the right thing,” the GSW head coach admitted. But for Klay’s mental peace, the right decision for him seemed to be moving to a new destination. “I’m hoping Klay can move on from the injuries psychologically and emotionally, which I think he struggled to do here, frankly. So I think a fresh start is great for him,” Steve Kerr said on the TK Show.
Along with the injuries that took a toll on him over time, the Warrior was also reportedly disappointed with the franchise that they couldn’t repeat a contract offer like the one they gave to Draymond Green. Further, even the outspoken hooper seemingly offended the Klay, weeks later, when he responded to the rumors by saying, “Klay tore his ACL. They paid him $160 million.” Whether this directly affected or influenced the Splash Brother’s decision to move away is something only he can answer.
At the end of the day, Klay Thompson feels wanted and valued again. On the other hand, the Warriors are ready to refurbish as the final phase of the Stephen Curry era begins.

The Warriors look to fill the Klay Thompson void
What’s your perspective on:
Can Klay Thompson bounce back and lead the Warriors to another championship despite his setbacks?

Months before Klay announced his Mavericks move, the Warriors had adjusted their roster. Steve Kerr had found a replacement for Thompson in Brandon Podziemski. The southpaw guard displayed exemplary traits. He defends with passion and knocks down threes, with efficiency. As a mere rookie, he took over the Splash Brother’s place in the starting lineup. And he has solidified his place well. When speaking of the team, Steve Kerr also expressed some excitement. There was remorse to see Klay leave. At the same time, the minutes freed can now go to the younger core, aiding in their sound development and a further extension of the ‘Bay Area’ dynasty.

“I think it could be good for us, we’re going to have to fill the void that he’s left. But as long as we attack it from a positive manner. Hey, there’s minutes there and there’s also an opportunity to maybe play a little bit differently, to do some different things, and to discover some things about our team that those are all exciting factors that our fans will enjoy,” Steve Kerr admitted.
A new age dawns over the Golden State Warriors. Pod, Kuminga, and other prodigies will get a chance to flash their skills. At the same time, a big move is imminent in the coming few seasons that will help Stephen Curry make the most of his extension. Buddy Hield has been added to the squad too, amidst a failed Lauri Markkanen pursuit. Now, with Derrick Rose unexpectedly available, could we see a late incoming? Whatever happens, even though the Bay Area’s doors will always be open for Klay, sadly, that era is over.
