With the trade deadline inching closer, all eyes are on the Warriors to see what move they make next. They have reportedly called multiple teams about every available All-Star player, including their former superstar, Kevin Durant. But does adding a 36-year-old KD have the same impact it had the last time? Well, Steve Kerr certainly thinks so!
Fueling Durant’s chances of a potential return to the Bay Area, Kerr said, “Yeah, he’s timeless. He really is… He’s just a beautiful basketball player. Maybe the smoothest scorer that’s ever played the game.” Regardless of his age, The Slim Reaper has been in incredible form this season, averaging 26.9 points and over six rebounds. And the Warriors already know that he fits their culture well. That’s because he led them to two titles the last time he was there.
As amazing as acquiring KD sounds on paper, adding an ageing superstar does have its drawbacks. Sure, the Suns forward is still an elite player. But he is currently dealing with an ankle sprain, making him doubtful for tomorrow’s Thunder clash. And injuries can be a serious concern at this age. Obviously, this would only add to the Warriors’ problems as they are already dealing with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green’s constant injury woes.

Moreover, Joe Lacob would have to give up a lot of valuable future assets to acquire a superstar like KD. Andrew Wiggins is also in trade talks among other pieces. But Kerr has made peace with the possibility of Wiggs leaving, “There’s a reason his (Wiggins) name is out there. He’s a really good player and he’s on a contract that’s possible to put into big trades to go out and get somebody you got your eye on. This is how the league works.”

Well, Wiggins is in the second year of his four-year $109 million contract and he has been in solid form so far, averaging 17.6 points and nearly five boards. Of course, his market value is very high as he is in the middle of his prime, and trading him could get Lacob the superstar he needs. But what if none of their pursuits materialize in a trade?
Steve Kerr claims he is “Comfortable” even if the Warriors make Zero trades before the deadline
Of course, risking the future for a chance to win now is not an easy decision for any front office. And there is a chance the Warriors end up making no trades and run with the roster they currently have. Surprisingly, Kerr is okay with that scenario as well, “I’m very comfortable if we don’t end up doing anything. I’m also very practical… Is it really feasible to go and make some huge deal that’s going to turn us into a contender? That’s really hard to do that.”

They would likely have to give up multiple future draft picks and their young core to acquire Durant or any other superstar of his calibre. And Kerr deemed it “insane” claiming that everyone, including Steph realizes it. Well, only one day remains before the deadline ends. So, the world will find out soon if the Warriors want to risk everything for one last chance at glory with Steph or hold on to their assets to build for the future.
