Steve Kerr's loyalty to Kamala Harris—Is he the voice we need in today's political climate?

Little over a month ago, Steve Kerr stood at the United Center podium in Chicago addressing a large crowd. No, it wasn’t a swarm of Warriors fans. Those nerves make Kerr feel “good”. The nine-time champion spoke at the Democratic National Convention in support of presidential candidate Kamala Harris. He famously hit the ‘night night’ on Donald Trump, the Republican Party nominee. It was a gutsy way to conclude his ‘united’ speech. However, how was he feeling during it?

On the Dan LeBatard Show, the host encouraged the US to register and spread awareness about the importance of voting. It was a gesture Kerr heavily appreciated before going into detail about his speech. As expected, it was a new experience for him, and the pressure wasn’t soothing like the big shots he hit with Michael Jordan and the Bulls. The setting, audience, and experience all sent chills down his spine. But it was all worth it to him.

“The political spectrum is different. You know, the setting was different. Having the teleprompters on either side of me addressing the crowd knowing there were millions of people watching on TV. It was definitely nerve-wracking but as I said I am glad I did it. I am glad I spoke my mind. I am glad I got the message across that I wanted to get across and yeah I think I just want to encourage everybody to vote,” the Warriors HC said on the show.

In the past, Steve Kerr had never taken such a direct political stance. The most noteworthy of it came when the Warriors’ White House invitation was withdrawn by Donald Trump in 2017. It stemmed from Stephen Curry’s hesitation. But as his coach, he stood up for the franchise cornerstone.

“Not surprised. He was going to break up with us before we could break up with him” he said about Trump’s actions. The Bay area would break their hiatus of visiting in 2022 when they appeared in front of President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris. That was also the first time Curry met the now-presidential candidate and also shared the same views as his coach since.

Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry both are backing Kamala Harris

Just days after Kerr’s speech, his high-profile star Stephen Curry also endorsed Kamala Harris during the DNC. It came in the form of a video message from the Warriors megastar. With the Paris gold medal around his neck, he said “I knew then and I definitely know now, the Oval Office suits her well. So in the words of Michelle Obama, do something. Go vote. Be active,” as part of his message.

However, this wasn’t the first time he had endorsed the Democratic Party. In 2020, he showed his allegiance to Joe Biden similarly. With all his kids and Ayesha in a video, he forwarded his belief in the current president and has vowed to do the same for Harris.

In a later interview with Bloomberg, he spoke about taking the risks of being politically active and the effect it can have on his loyal fans. For him, it’s simply about believing in his principles and acting upon them. “I just approach everything with decency and humanity. It’s not like I’m out here casting flames at the other side — it’s what I believe in. Whether you agree with me or not, you want to be able to foster positive conversations. You want to be able to have intelligent conversations about what’s actually happening” Curry explained.

Kamala Harris also visited Team USA before they departed for Paris, sharing her thoughts with them and empowering them for their mission. With multiple interactions with her, it seems Curry and Steve Kerr have made their choice.
