The Golden State Warriors are undoubtedly one of the most successful franchises in NBA history. Their incredible run from 2015 saw them become a dynasty in the league, winning 4 championships in 7 years. This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without their star point guard, Stephen Curry. However, another key contributor that does not get talked about as much is their head coach, Steve Kerr.

Steve Kerr joined the Warriors in 2014. After a first-round exit in the 2013-14 season, the Warriors needed a coach who could guide them all the way to the championship. Steve Kerr did just that in his very first season with the team. However, entering the 2023-24 season, Kerr’s contract with the Warriors is soon to expire. When asked about his contract, the Warriors owner, Joe Lacob, had a few words.

Steve Kerr has been a winner all his life. The 57-year-old has had a history of glory in the NBA, before even joining the Warriors. Kerr was part of 6 teams during his playing years. However, it was his time with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs that earned him immense success. After winning a historic three-peat with the Bulls, Kerr joined the San Antonio Spurs, striking gold with them immediately in 1999. He then went on to win another championship with them in 2003. He brought the same knack of success to the Warriors franchise as a coach in 2014.

Right from the beginning of his tenure with the Warriors, Kerr proved he was an excellent coach. Drawing elements from his previous teams, Kerr employed an incredible offensive strategy propelling the Warriors to the championship in 2015. The 57 year old replicated his success in his playing days as a head coach, winning 4 championships with the Warriors.

However, his contract may come to an end in the next season unless the Warriors offer the 9-time champion a lucrative deal.

Over the years, Kerr formed a strong bond with the Warriors’ “Big Three”, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson. He also formed a great relationship with the Warriors front office. After his commendable service to the Warriors franchise, letting him go would be a heartbreaker for every Warriors fan. The Warriors owner, Joe Lacob, however, does not seem to provide much clarity about the issue either.

The Warriors owner, Joe Lacob, has had a lot to deal with this offseason. The 67 year old billionaire has overseen one of the busiest offseasons for the Warriors in recent years. Warriors are significantly over the luxury tax for the next season after their major deal with Chris Paul. This is why there have been questions raised regarding head coach Steve Kerr’s future with the Warriors.

When asked about Kerr’s future with the franchise in a recent interview, Lacob said “We’ll have those discussions I’m sure soon. Steve loves being a coach of the Warriors. I love Steve, we love Steve, I’m sure we’ll figure something out.”

Lacob claimed to love Kerr as the Warriors’ head coach, but he did not provide any decisive statement to say that Kerr will return to the Warriors after next season.

Kerr has a highly successful run as the Warriors’ head coach. His brilliant plays and strategies have brought a revolution in the game. However, in a league where coaches sign deals of up to $80M, Kerr is currently paid less than $10M a year. Given his success with the team, the franchise will have to offer a significant deal to retain the services of the 9-time champion.
