The Currys have long been known as ‘NBA Royalty.’ Not that they need the extra attention and spotlight on them. The name ‘Curry’ in itself ensures that all the cameras zoom in to catch every minute detail. And this aspect seems to be the most bothersome for Sonya Curry. The monumental success of her eldest son, Stephen Curry, has only served to further increase the attention on the family.
And while they understand it comes as part of the global recognition and fame, it doesn’t mean they don’t find it irritating. Not one to keep her thoughts to herself, Mama Curry details their side of the story. The one that we often don’t get to hear.
“To me, I don’t even understand what that means!” she exclaimed in the introductory episode of the Raising Fame podcast. “It’s not what you essentially are … There’s so many other moms just like me. So I don’t get that because they often catch me in situations that I don’t like.”

“I’m making some crazy fakes or that I’m trying to get my daughter-in-law to take a sip of my margarita and she’s pregnant because I just wanted to take, you know, it’s just crazy… I’ve been on television so much because of that, then I think they’ve related that and the success of our kids [to the royalty status],” she explained. It certainly does make a whole lot of sense.
We sure are very familiar with Sonya Curry’s extreme reactions from the stands. If you didn’t know already, the 58-year-old has quite a fan following for her courtside antics and even has a bunch of GIFs with some of the more iconic Sonya Curry moments. While that’s all in good fun (even Stephen Curry gets his fair share of a kick out of them!), it seems they didn’t just come by chance. Oh no, they weren’t simply lucky coincidences.
Stephen Curry’s entrepreneur mom reveals details of media attention
The media does love its Currys, James and Bryants. But sometimes it can go a little too overboard. And it seems like Sonya Curry learned just how far they can go during the Warriors’ first title year during the Stephen Curry era. “We actually found out the first year they were going for the NBA title that at a game they keep a camera designated to us. On us the whole game. And we never knew that!” Sonya said in genuine wonder.

“So whenever they needed something, they could click on it and they take it from different places. So our times during the game, so it could have been, we just got there and sat down where they used that clip at like the third quarter… Or that expression on my face – “she’s disinterested” or “she’s mad at Stephen” or “she’s this”,” Sonya said, clarifying how what all of us see on TV and social media might not be what happened in reality.
What’s your perspective on:
Is the NBA media unfairly targeting Sonya Curry, or is there more to the story?
Have an interesting take?
While understanding the whole picture does make us feel for them, there is only so much they can do to protect their privacy. The fame that comes with being a global basketball superstar is both a blessing and a curse. While these entities can use their popularity through these platforms for great things, it can also prove to be a real headache. Particularly for the families.
But like we said, it is one of the least liked aspects of fame. Well, what do you think? Share your thoughts below.
