Gilbert Arenas finally acknowledges Curry—was he wrong to snub him in the first place?

Replacing ‘Guard for the Warriors’ with ‘Olympic Gold Medalist’ on his Instagram bio, Stephen Curry showed how much the international accomplishment meant to him. Although most fans already considered him one of the greatest to ever do it before the tournament, his Paris heroics have solidified his legacy even further. Sure enough, former Warriors’ star Gilbert Arenas was also impressed by Steph’s Olympics dominance as he finally included him in his esteemed Top 5 list, but with a slight twist.

During the Gil’s Arena pod, Agent Zero said, “This reminds me of my new Top 5. I got six people in the Top 5.” Similar to most basketball fans, Arenas also had his list of the five greatest players in his opinion, “My original Top 5: MJ, LeBron, Kobe, Shaq and Magic.” Notice how Steph initially did not make the cut? However, Arenas was recently forced to make a major tweak to the list, “Then I added Steph to my Top 5. Yeah, I don’t know who to push out, so you have to give me some time.”

Although he currently had no reason to omit a player from his list to make room for Steph, Arenas could not resist bestowing the Baby-Faced Assassin with the honor, “That Olympic performance kind of did it for me. The reason is this: As a hooper, there’s moments in history and moments and times in your game where you have to when the light is on you, you shine. And that was it.”

Yes, Steph is a four-time champion and a two-time MVP, but Arenas believes he “didn’t have a (Michael) Jordan moment.” That one moment every fan would remember him by. However, his final shot over two French defenders to seal the gold medal for Team USA did the job for Arenas, “When it came here, he did it and I’m like he finally got his moment.”

Can Stephen Curry ever crack the GOAT conversation?

Well, Steph’s heroics in Paris helped him crack Arenas’ Top 5 list. But despite the countless accolades, he is hardly ever mentioned in the GOAT conversation. For the majority of fans, this debate usually revolves around LeBron James and Michael Jordan. However, Steph has as many titles as LBJ does and he has beaten the Lakers star three times in the finals. Sure, it was with some help from Durant, Draymond, and Klay, but it was a win regardless. And after Steph won his first Finals MVP two years ago, many believed that was the moment he solidified his greatness.

Impressed by his body of work, Shaquille O’Neal put forth a bold pondering point last year on Inside The NBA, “I’m just wondering coz he’s been consistently the best shooter his whole career, I’m wondering if it is time to start putting him in the best player of all-time conversation.” In terms of accolades and influence, Steph could be in consideration. But many fans would argue that he is only great on the offensive end, but lacks defensive prowess. And that’s why LeBron and MJ are always on top of people’s minds because they can do everything on the court. While Steph has already deemed himself the “best point guard ever” over Magic, what do you think he has to achieve to be considered the GOAT?
