Is receiving jeers and taunts from fans a common occurrence for NBA players? Yes, it’s quite common. The intensity of games can sometimes lead to fans directing harsh criticism at players. While players are likely to forget this, this is not the case for family. Stephen Curry’s grandmother prepared to retort at the criticisms.
In an episode of the Raising Fame podcast, Stephen Curry’s mother Sonya not that as the family of a basketball star, they weren’t immune to the jeers from the crowd. While Sonya said she became used to it, there were still moments when the “derogatory” remarks and the ‘nastiness’ would just get to her. However, Steph’s grandma Candy Adams did not have the same level of patience.
“The worst is in the stands, when people are yelling like just, derogatory things, against your kids. And to a certain point, you go ‘They’re just………let it go.’ But then they get really, really nasty, and then they get right behind you” described Sonya.

“My mom…. this game in Cleveland, and then they were saying the same, knew that she was his grandmother, and was just ripping him like…. and my mom does not know to hold her tongue, and the security people had to come up, because she will fight you. I’m not even joking, she will fight.”
Stephen Curry is often subjected to a lot of trash talk from the crowd. A part of it comes when the Golden State Warriors are visiting. However, some instances have occurred back home as well. In January, the Warriors lost back-to-back games and had to face their fans’ wrath.
There are instances where fans rage is directed at players and their families outside the court. In 2019, as the Warriors were in Toronto for the NBA Finals, some angry Raptors fans went after Sonya Curry. Boos erupted from all sides, with one loud individual repeatedly yelling “F**k you!” Displaying some courage, Sonya walked over to the crowd and talked back. After all, no matter how much one stays silent, it is easy to reach a limit after a certain point.
“At some point, you hold it together, you hold it together, and then you lose it. I mean, I’ve lost it several times, and I’ve gotten ridiculed for losing it” Sonya continued. “And I’m like, but you’re not sitting in my seat and you’re not hearing. And that’s your baby. Whatever they are to everyone else…. it’s still your baby.”
The NBA world is filled with instances of players towing the line when fans take things too far. LeBron James reportedly asked two rude fans to be kicked out after they allegedly called for his eldest son, Bronny, to have an accident. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving went up against an attendee after he reportedly insulted the Slovenian’s family. Stephen Curry himself is not immune to losing his cool, but has taken to dealing with the taunts in a careful manner, as seen from a five-year old incident.

How did Stephen Curry react when Sonya and Ayesha were heckled by fans?
Sonya getting heckled by the fan in Toronto wasn’t an isolated incident. Four days before the incident, a Raptors fan was reportedly arrested for making vulgar comments about Steph’s wife Ayesha. The Warriors star addressed this issue during a presser, stating that success also often shows its ugly side. For him, continuous success is almost always met with the worst.
“I think it’s kind of stupid, to be honest, in terms of people camping outside our hotel just to yell expletives at either us or our family members or whatever the case is,” said Curry. “But we handle all that stuff with class and try to ignore it the best we can. And if they get something out of it, so be it. But it doesn’t affect us at all in terms of what we’re trying to do and how we carry ourselves as a team as players and as people that represent us and our families as well.’’
