Is Anthony Edwards' disrespect for NBA legends a sign of generational disconnect in sports?

“(Michael Jordan) was the only one that really had skill, you know what I mean?” Remember this moment when Anthony Edwards criticized the old NBA era, upsetting Paul George? Everyone has their opinion on his stance. But in a heartwarming moment in the NBA, the opposite happened between Quincy Olivari and Stephen Curry. With an age gap of 13 years, we often see athletes having idols and when they get to play with them or against them, it becomes a dream come true. Paul George loved every bit of it.

In the latest podcast episode of Podcast P with Paul George, he detailed the moment between the young Los Angeles Lakers basketball player and his idol, Stephen Curry. Moreover, it made George content to see the respect the players gave the players of the previous era. It all comes after Anthony Edwards’ comment on the older generation of basketball players.

In a pre-season game between the Lakers and the Warriors, Curry embraced Bronny James in the end and we could see Olivari waiting to meet his superhero. They met, Curry gave some tips, embraced, and headed to the locker room. Later, Quincy Olivari spoke about his hero in a press conference so passionately, that it left everyone teary-eyed. It surely moved Paul too!

Paul George stated in the podcast, “Absolutely, absolutely. I think there is a disconnect between eras, that we don’t give each other enough flowers. Obviously, everyone operated differently in their eras and times were different in their eras. And, I think there is definitely a disconnect with players that play before us. They have a disconnection with how the game is now. The players in the league now.”

And of course, the Anthony Edwards comment springs to our minds. His comment irked a lot of superstars, and Paul George mentioned how “disrespectful” it was to his peers.

Paul George loves the Quincy Olivari-Stephen Curry heartwarming moment!

He continued, “And so, you know, I think it’s awesome. That moment was awesome. I saw it and you know, that’s what the league is about. Like, that’s what the NBA is about. That’s what sports is about. Handing the baton to the next generation. I thought it was a candid genuine moment between Steph and Olivari.”

The Philadelphia 76ers guard also detailed how every kid dreamed of playing in the NBA. Just imagine. You don a jersey, enter the court to play the game, and later meet your favorite superhero. Meeting them is something, but knowing the player recognizes your talent? Put yourself in Olivari’s shoes and that’s what you feel. Paul George communicated it with precision and there is undeniably a gap between generations.

The Millennials and the Gen-Z wars continue online and within the NBA fraternity. Stories like Quincy and Steph’s meet-up give hope to the already growing distance between the two eras. Be it LeBron James or Michael Jordan, they surely gave respects to Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain for their contributions to the sport. We hope we can see more moments to cherish the legends of the game.
