Stephen Curry is back! Well, technically, he was already back last Friday against the Pelicans after missing two straight games due to a pelvic contusion. But it was clear that the injury was still bothering him as he was unable to perform up to his standard, finishing with only 23 points on 7 of 21 shooting. However, come Tuesday’s matchup, the Golden State Warriors player made sure the world never stopped talking about him—whether it be for making history or drumming up some courtside controversy!
In what was a high-stakes game vs the Memphis Grizzlies, the Warriors delivered a scintillating 134-125 defeat to their opponents, exposing the latter’s defensive flaws. On one hand, Curry pulled off an iconic night with a historic 52 points, becoming one of the Top-25 scorers in NBA history, while also passing retired Warriors player Rick Barry for the second-most 50-point games in franchise history (15), behind the iconic 72-NBA record holder Wilt Chamberlain (105). The team’s victory, which held massive significance for playoff seeding, also helped them overtake Memphis for fifth place in the Western Conference standings.
On the other hand, though, the Grizzlies’ worrisome state was out in the open: Taylor Jenkins’ team has given up a minimum of 17 3-pointers in seven of the last eight games. What’s more? Since February 1 of this year, the team also holds a lowly 19th rank in defensive rating. “It’s been the last couple of months. We’re just struggling to find our identity on that end,” Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane said after the game. Perhaps that explains why he was frustrated and even indulged in a bit of an altercation with Curry during the game…

With the Warriors leading by five points and less than thirty seconds remaining on the clock, the Grizzlies wisely double-teamed Curry with Ban and Jaylen Wells to stop him from shooting. Seeing the superstar trapped near the team bench, Steve Kerr called a timeout. After the whistle, Steph rose for a practice three-pointer but his shot was swatted midway by Desmond Bane. As expected, the four-time champ was not pleased with Bane’s act and got right into his face in frustration.
Santi Aldama quickly stepped in to separate the two stars but Steph shoved both Grizzlies players before heading to the bench. Maybe, he had reached his tipping point from how aggressively the Grizzlies defended him all night and not getting the desired foul calls from the refs. Even the on-air announcer pointed it out on Live TV, “He was so upset at being fouled that he was talking to Desmond Bane. And he’s kind of sick of the treatment he’s gotten tonight. He said something and he went right to the bench so it did not escalate.”
Meanwhile, his colleague detailed the Bane confrontation, “After the whistle, he stripped him and Steph didn’t like it. That’s what led to the frustration… Steph said little something to him… Emotions running high. It’s that type of game.” Unfortunately, this was not the only controversy during the high-intensity match-up. Another Grizzlies player Ja Morant might be in trouble with the NBA…
During the final seconds of the matchup, Morant reportedly used a finger gun gesture toward the Warriors bench after double-technical fouls were assessed to both him and Warriors guard Buddy Hield, who also used the same gesture toward Morant. Several Warriors players reportedly stepped in and notified officials about the hand sign. Notably, the 25-year-old has already been suspended twice after he reportedly flashed a gun on Instagram live videos in 2023—first, an eight-game suspension for carrying a gun at a Denver nightclub, and again a 25-game suspension for flashing a gun inside a car.
Having said that, for now, the Dub Nation seems to be more concerned about how Curry was treated…
NBA World points out NBA Refs’ ‘hatred’ toward Stephen Curry amid stern warning for Grizzlies
Although Steph had a historic offensive night, making twelve three-pointers and getting a 52-point double-double, his score could have been even higher had he gotten the calls he wanted. All night, the Grizzlies were extremely physical while guarding Steph, constantly double-teaming him, trying to get the ball out of his hands. But he went to the free-throw line only eight times.
Sure enough, Dub Nation was not pleased with the officials’ decision-making and called them out with comments like “The refs were so obviously biased against Steph tonight. It’s disgusting” and “Oh yeah and the refs STILL hate Steph btw.” One was even left wondering, “Honestly I think the Refs sometimes get caught up in watching Steph they forget about the whistle.” Well, when Curry is shooting like he did tonight, it’s a treat to watch for everyone.

Fans also understood why Steph reacted the way he did when Bane swatted his shot during the timeout, “I don’t blame him. This mf gets guarded like he’s playing football every single game.” With Curry being the primary scorer for the Warriors, he is faced with the toughest defense every time he steps on the court and it can become frustrating at times – especially when he’s not getting the foul calls he believes he should. Unfortunately for his opponents, all it does is just makes him go even harder on offense. One fan even issued a warning for the Grizzlies, “Don’t poke a bear.”

It was too late. Steph’s 52 points were enough to seal the win for his team and they have moved up to the fifth seed in the West, at least for now. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies have fallen to the sixth seed after tonight’s loss. A pivotal game indeed.
