The 2023-24 season of women’s college basketball is off to a great start. South Carolina played against Notre Dame in Paris, France and it looked like a transition of the generation to the future of basketball. The freshmen from both teams stole the spotlight with their amazing performances. South Carolina point guard MiLaysia Fulwiley stole the show as she put up 17 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals on the scoreboard to ensure a 100-71 victory for the team.

The one thing that stood out was her spectacular execution of the lay-up as she went coast-to-coast, quick-faked a dish to Kamilla Cardoso in the post, and went up and under the final defender. And she did all this in the first ten minutes of her collegiate career.

The WJ Keenan High School alum’s performance was so good that it had NBA legends shouting her out. Magic Johnson took to his X to say that she was just better than some of the most talented players on the court today. He especially pointed out her coast-to-coast move, calling it “the best move in all of basketball”.

And he was not the only one to recognize this. Stephen Curry also showered his praise telling her that he sees her. He reposted the clip of her lay-up to his story adding, “I SEE  YOU @LAYWITDABUTTER”. Not exactly a bad start to your career, huh.

A brief look into MiLaysia

A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Fulwiley has been doing this since her school days. During her time with WJ Keenan High School, the 5-foot-10 guard was the program’s all-time leading scorer. During her senior year, she earned an All-America nod.

When taking to the broadcast she explained that it was her favourite move. “I was like, all right,” Fulwiley said. “And I just felt like I was in high school, and that was my favorite move when I was in high school, so I just did it.” With stars like her and Hannah Hidalgo joining into the league, it seems like the future of basketball is in good hands.
