Can the Warriors maintain their dynasty without Bob Myers, or is his absence too big a void?

“I don’t know what it’s going to be like without him. There’s already a really hollow feeling just knowing he’s not going to be in the building every day.” Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr was amongst those who revealed being most affected after former franchise GM Bob Myers announced his exit. Having joined the Warriors even before Kerr, Myers oversaw the franchise’s best era during his 13 years, forming a good rapport with not only the players he was working for but also the head coach. Therefore, the way that their recent interaction went would have certainly left Bay Area fans in stitches.

During the preseason matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers, Bob Myers, who now works with ESPN, was able to get into a one-on-one conversation with his old comrade. When the sportscaster asked, “Anything you need from me for the fourth quarter and the broadcast”, Kerr hilariously replied, “We were done with you two years ago.” Both individuals were all smiles at the end of that remark, sharing a warm side hug before separating.

However, Kerr soon returned, with Stephen Curry alongside him. As Myers asked “On a scale of 1-10, how much are you guys missing me?”, the All-Time Three Point Leader straightaway stated, “I’m having Real PTSD right now.” With Klay Thompson having already left, Curry does not need to be reminded of another one of his close professional colleagues who bid adieu before they needed to.

That brief moment would have been enough to affect not only Warriors fans but NBA enthusiasts as a whole. After all, if the relationship between former Chicago Bulls GM Jerry Krause and former HC Phil Jackson is an example of what allegedly shouldn’t be, the bond between Myers and Kerr is the opposite of that. If Michael Jordan and Jerry Krause had their tensions, Stephen Curry and Bob Myers certainly did not. Not looking to stay silent, many of the people who viewed the clip soon descended onto the comments section to share their thoughts.

Reacting to the clip on Instagram, one social media user wrote Good ole bob, accompanied by a couple of laughing emojis.

While history has shown that the relationship between a general manager and a player is typically business-like, Bob Myers has become the exception. After all, in the former GM’s own words: “I kind of push back and go, what is the point of any job if you don’t like and build relationships with who you go to work with? What is the point? Some would say to win. OK. But who are you doing that with, and what happens after that?” This philosophy may have helped in creating a much better environment than what Stephen Curry experienced during his rookie season, which in turn led to the player and his squad pushing themselves towards securing four championship titles to their name.

Another social media user appreciated that the trio still doesn’t seem to have lost their charm. This caused him to call out the interview as when the homies get to do a presentation together.” After all, along with reminiscing on old times, no conversation between close friends would be complete without a bit of roast and rib-tickling. While Steve Kerr took hilarious shots at the former GM, Myers also didn’t back down, commenting “I feel like you didn’t coach as well while I was here.” Kerr retorted back saying, “I feel like we have more talent now that Mike Dunleavy is the GM.” Meanwhile Curry, not representing the typical third wheel, enjoyed every bit of the roast session.

Drawing attention towards the “On a scale of 1-10” remark, one social media user spoke on behalf of the lead scorer and the HC, writing They wanted to say 10.” After all, Curry revealing that he ‘experienced’ PTSD with Myers standing in front of him is not the first instance of the player highlighting what the GM’s exit in 2023 meant to him.

After the official announcement of Myers’ exit was made, Curry took to his official Instagram account and shared a tribute on his story, to be viewed by millions of his followers. Highlighting a picture of him and Myers hugging, the player also wrote a caption alongside the picture that read “Before the trophies and the memories over this run, I remember I told you “you better get it right!” And you did. The GM role was great and you did your thing, but forever grateful to you as a friend forever. Changed each other’s lives! Enjoy the next chapter my guy.” With a “Thank you Bob” to end the message, there couldn’t have been anything better used to make a grown man cry.

Highlighting his likeness to Bob Myers, one individual took it upon himself to highlight a new job for him. This was apparent from the comment he wrote, stating Lakers should hire that guy and let Pelinka go.” Given that the Lakers GM has not been without his own fair share of criticism, some fans of LeBron James and co. might be looking for a change. However, Myers left the GM position for a reason, and returning to it, even though it is with another team, may not be on his agenda.

Overall, the reactions were quite positive towards the interaction between the two Warriors stars and the former GM. Thanks to a 6-0 preseason win record, the Bay Area franchise seems to have a good start to its tournament run. Therefore, if all goes right, we may keep getting more glimpses of Bob Myers interviewing his former comrades.
