Is Stephen Curry the real leader cleaning up Draymond Green's mess on and off the court?

Stephen Curry made a strong statement in the last two games of the Paris Olympics, sending a message to the NBA world. After an underwhelming run in the initial stages, the sharpshooter turned into a human torch, winning his first Olympic gold medal with Team USA. Now that Steph has completed national duty, he’s back to the basics, which is to hold together a sinking Golden State Warriors. A media vet, reflecting on the situation, addressed the superstar’s overloaded burden, after Draymond Green‘s pesky punditry.

After a disappointing finish to the 2023-24 NBA season, problems have only continued to mount for the Warriors. Firstly, the team lost its ace shooter, Klay Thompson, leaving a huge void. Secondly, the Dubs’ attempt to rope in a perfect wingman for Steph has been far from a success story. Above all, the team could suffer a locker-room collapse because of Draymond Green’s recent antics. He already made a huge dent in the Dubs’ 2024 playoff chance, after the league slapped a suspension for his violent on-court behavior.

However, the drama around his name hasn’t stopped. Reflecting on the Warriors’ worrying state and Stephen Curry‘s elite showcase for Team USA, Fox Sports‘ Veejay Huskey decoded an important message. Huskey said, “It’s been tough for them (Dubs) and Draymond has decided that he was going to sit on his podcast and actually take shots at his own coach and his rotations and things of that nature. And I think what Steph did today was to show people that, ‘Oh yeah! When we get back, ‘I’m still that guy’.”

Throughout the Olympics, DrayMagic left constant criticism of Steve Kerr’s coaching. “Quite frankly, I don’t like it. Come out with a rotation and stick with it. These teams aren’t good enough to where we’re trying to match their lineup. They gotta match our lineup,” he said. He even put multiple tweets, criticizing the mastermind’s rotation policy, especially around KD and Jayson Tatum.

While he has the right to his opinion, this act could create an unnecessary rift in the already sinking Warriors ship that Steph Curry has been carrying in the last few months.

What’s Stephen Curry & Co’s imminent threat?

Apart from the Draymond Green fiasco, there is another serious trouble. It’s the Klay Thompson situation. After the Splash Brother’s exit and a failed offseason, the Bay Area looks like it is far from qualifying for the playoffs, rather than winning a Championship. The team’s attempt to rope Lauri Markkanen also didn’t succeed and has landed Joe Lacob and Co. under a shower of mockery.

Have an interesting take?

The Dubs have no option left other than resting their trust on Stephen Curry and the youth movement. Nevertheless, Veejay Huskey still remained hopeful of Steph, as he added, “He’s the guy, I think can carry what he just did (Olympics) and back into the NBA and his team need needs it most cuz remember Klay’s not there no more.”

On the other hand, Curry also has the necessary but un-fired weapons for his cause. Last season, the Dubs saw the uprising of Jonathan Kuminga. And with Klay Thompson out of the picture, he could further increase his visibility on the side. Apart from that, last year, rookies Brandin Podzienski and Trayce Jackson-Davis showed promising signs too. GSW has been hesitant to let go of its youngsters in trades, so it’s safe to assume that they’ll be playing an increased and more prominent role in the future.

Nevertheless, it’s up to Steve Kerr to find the right mix for the Dubs to put the team back on top.
