When you have a family like the Currys, you can take on anything in the world and be a rousing success at it, too. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that had it not been for the steadfast support and tireless efforts of his parents, Stephen Curry might have given up on his basketball dreams. While it’s true that Curry had basketball running through his veins, his journey to reach the NBA was never easy, as we are all well aware of.

And now, as he stands at his first (and a good chance this is his last) Olympics stage with a group that boasts some of the biggest names in the NBA, the reality of it all seems to strike him in the face. “It’s everything I imagined it to be,” Curry said. “Obviously this is my first go around in the Olympics. Knew we were gonna get challenged by a great Serbia team… I just kinda got lost in the moment of understanding how big this stage is and what’s at stake for this team. It was special. It’s the most fun I’ve had in a very long time.”

Having gone through a shooting slump in the previous matchups, the ‘Chef’ got to cooking when it mattered the most. Steph finished the night with a spectacular stat line – 36 points and eight rebounds while draining nine from downtown. And as he pointed out, he had fun with it, too. Another person having just as much fun (perhaps even more) was none other than his mom, Sonya Curry.

In the Instagram story updates shared by Steph’s sister, Sydel Curry-Lee, Sonya was seen leading the USA cheers from the stands. Her daughter gave Sonya her flowers for her contribution. “Not gonna lie to yall, she was leading most of the USA cheers in the arena. She was turnt upppppp. lol.”

Then again, this is nothing new for the 58-year-old.

Sonya Curry was the ‘It mom’ of basketball

Over the years, Mama Curry has become famous for her unabashed celebration or the screaming and yelling, whatever the occasion demands, at her kids’ games. Dell Curry was the calm, stoic one, while his wife (ex) was anything but. In fact, many GIFs on the internet showcase Sonya’s animated antics on the sidelines. And who do you think enjoys them the most?

“They show my dad with his stoic face and my mom tearing up and yelling and screaming,” Stephen Curry shared to SF Gate in 2013. Clearly, this isn’t the first rodeo of either the mom or the son! But Stephen Curry wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, this woman was the reason the skinny, overlooked, and underrated young boy became the ‘Bay Area God’.

“She’s a strong woman … A lot of people say whatever defensive abilities I have, I get from her – my toughness and grittiness.”
