Did Curry's emotional exit show true sportsmanship, or was it a strategic move to spotlight Klay?

It was an odd sight at Chase Center last night. Not in the wildest dream, a Warriors fan would have imagined a 1v1 between Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. Well, it was the first-ever play on the Tuesday night reunion game. The Baby-faced Assassin, who was taken aback by the play, himself narrated his unusual experience on the court. Most importantly, the superstar explained why he deliberately a quick exit during the Dubs’ tribute to Klay ahead of the tip-off.

“I ain’t never seen anybody give anybody that much love before,” this is how Charles Barkley described the fans’ ovation after the tribute. Usually, we find the ex-team’s fans booing at the player. Here, it was something else. It was a cascade of emotions and Steph, Klay’s rightful Splash Brother, decided to slip out of the situation for a reason. Before anyone could blow it out of proportion, the superstar himself cleared the air.

Speaking to the reporters at the post-game presser, Stephen Curry took everyone in the room back to the emotional moment. And described every minute details of his emotions. I was on the tunnel during the first part of the tribute video ’cause I knew I’d get real emotional if I was out there, said the superstar. He further added, “Looking down and watching him so I try to protect myself a little bit there and then you didn’t know how long the standing ovation was going to go because that’s the fans’ moment to acknowledge him and celebrate him.”

So, we could also say that Steph stepped back and gave the stage entirely to Klay Thompson. Moreover, Steph was glad that he did that, as he narrated the rest of the incident, saying, “He was happy and that I think he did his little shoulder shrug he’s like all right let’s go so that was very very cool moment.” However, following this, it was only game time!

Klay Thompson surprises Stephen Curry with the very first play

It was already unusual to witness Klay donning the Mavs’ fit in Chase Center. On top of it, the first ever play of the game was between Steph and Klay. The ace shooter wasn’t doing the catch-and-shoot act. Instead, the Mavericks spiced up the game. The Silent Assassin received a pass for a post-up play. Guess who was guarding him? Stephen Curry.

Speaking of the moment, Curry said, I am so surprised they ran a post up for him in the first play. I blacked out on that one I wasn’t going to let him score and I fouled him.” Klay didn’t miss his free throws and put the scorer to work. In the very next play, Steph sunk a three-pointer over his ex-teammate and did let him know that he shot over him.

Have an interesting take?

Following that, it was only a series of back and forth between the duo. At one point, Klay brought out Curry’s shimmy shake after drilling a three. On the other end, the Chef jawed back at him after sinking a touch post bucket. It was just cinema to watch these two go after each other. Curry had the last laugh, taking the win. Will we witness more of this in future? Let us know in the comments.
