Stephen Curry was drafted on a very special day for the Currys
Birthdays are undoubtedly a momentous occasion. Back in 2009, Stephen Curry’s father Dell had two reasons to celebrate. Not only was the former player turning 45, but he was also watching his eldest son follow in his footsteps and become a part of the big league. While the moment was extra special for Papa Curry, who had spent over 16 years in the NBA, it was also a source of relief for Sonya.
During an interview promoting her son’s Apple TV+ documentary, Underrated, the 58-year-old revealed that Stephen Curry getting drafted was a huge source of relief for her. However, there came a time during the process when she got extremely tense as well. “That day, it was actually his dad’s birthday, so he got drafted on Dell’s birthday” revealed Sonya.
“Hearing his name called, even though when they said Golden State Warriors pick him, I had no clue where Golden State was and I was like, ‘Where are you taking my child?’”. She continued stating that the occasion marked a new door opening that will further guide her son’s journey, because “when the door opened for the NBA, I knew he was going to walk in”.
The bond shared between Stephen Curry and his mother stands as a testament to mother-son relationships. Even after getting married and having his own family, the NBA legend makes it a point to never forget that one woman who raised him and guided him.
