Can Jonathan Kuminga live up to Stephen Curry's high praise and become the next big star?

Steph has all the skills a young rookie aspires to have. From handling the ball to shooting off the dribble to making his way through the zone defense to putting defenders on skates, and whatnot. We’ve seen the Splash Brother drain game-winners, showcase his ball handling while cutting through five defenders, and lead his team to four championships. However, out of all the aspects of his game, there is one ability that has kept Stephen Curry from his basketball fantasy.

See, he’s not an athletic player. And for the most part, there is no doubt about it. We know players like Ja Morant, Russell Westbrook, and others who are under 6-foot-3 and have the hops. Though Steph isn’t one of them. It is a miracle to see him throw it down, even in a wide-open transition. However, as much as his fans want to see him dunk, so is his fantasy. In the recent episode of Stephen Curry’s podcast, Heat Check, along with his father, Dell Curry, the 6-foot-2 guard talked about his basketball fantasy.

“I fantasize about it all the time. I’m 35 years old, 15 years in the league. And in the rim of the court in my backyard, one of them is always on 8 feet. The other day, Jonathan Kuminga did something in our pickup game. I threw a back door alley-oop to him, I thought I threw it to the corner of the backboard where there’s like, there’s no way he can get it. And he went up and got it!”

“I got home that afternoon. ‘Hey throw it up there let me go get it,’ (he thought) Let me just see what this feels like. Let me just, I just want to imagine if I could be up here on a 10-foot rim, what that feels like. No doubt.”, Steph said in the clip on his Instagram stories.

There is no doubt that Kuminga has one of the highest verticals in the league. He even drew comparisons to the Greek Freak at one point for his explosiveness. Though every serious hooper has at least once imagined what it would feel like to throw down a slam. While some grew up to add some serious inches to their vertical, some did not. And for those who didn’t, they tried it on shorter rims. However, there is nothing wrong with it. Although Stephen Curry isn’t a high flyer who can jump 40 inches, he can definitely drain shots from 40 feet deep. After a certain point, such crafty players have to stick to what they’re best at.

Stephen Curry is a decent dunker

While Curry has only had a few precious opportunities to show off his bounce, he’s been quite decent, whenever at it. He has enough vertical to throw down a two-hand slam in transition or jump off one foot to reach the iron. It’s impressive to see Steph try new things on the court. However, his talents are best suited outside the arc. This one time Curry slipped while going for a dunk, hitting the floor hard. This was followed by a corner three which was an air-ball.

It is safe to say that a player cannot have everything in his bag. LeBron James is regarded as the greatest of all time by many. Though he isn’t the most consistent shooter at the end of the day. Curry is now 36 and wouldn’t be jumping as high anymore. Still, the sniper knows his best skill, which he has worked on his whole childhood. It will be interesting to see Steph throw down vicious slams in Paris this summer.

What are your thoughts on Curry’s vertical? Do you think he needs some serious work on it? Let us know in the comments.
