Stephen Curry backing Kamala Harris—Is this the change America needs right now?

The 2024 Presidential Election recently saw an eventful week. On the Republican side, former President Donald Trump was confirmed at the RNC just days after an unsuccessful assassination attempt. Now, his rival and current President Joe Biden has dropped out of the race, with him and other members of the party voicing their support for Vice President Kamala Harris. These updates are reaching out on the other side of the spectrum too, as the Team USA is headed to Paris to participate in the Olympics.

Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic nominee was certainly on Stephen Curry’s mind during a recent press conference. He highlighted that it was a “big deal” that President Biden came out with his endorsement and that the 59-year-old politician was using the same to bring a different type of energy to the campaign. Given the fact that she served as the Senator from California, was previously the District Attorney of San Francisco, and later the Attorney General of the state, the NBA player appreciated her efforts and energy toward the “Bay Area.” In turn, he wanted to “give that energy right back to her.”

“Obviously, we’re representing our country here, and this is a very monumental next couple of months for our country. The direction that we are headed. So, hopefully, this is a great way to do our part in unifying the country” said Curry. “For her, in this moment going ahead, it’s all about positive energy and optimism knowing how divided our country is right now.”

Despite having been a prominent part of the NBA for over 15 years now, the upcoming games will be Stephen Curry’s first foray into the Olympics. While representing the country in itself is a big deal, doing so during an election year, when divisions are easy to be created on the grounds of several issues, is much more crucial. After all, if history has taught us anything, it is that sports can be one of the most effective unifying factors amongst the people. For the Golden State Warriors star, it is a way to bring a change to the meaning of representation.

“The fact we represent ourselves and our families, we’re going to make ourselves proud. We’re going to make our families proud. And I know it continues to raise our platform on speaking on things that matter and showing what respect and love and gratitude really means in the way we represent the country and really prepare ourselves,” said Curry. “Sports brings so many people together. And at this stage, you know what the conversation is. Not to say that it’s going to solve some of our national issues or how the election goes and that type of stuff. I’m just happy to know we can change what representing your country means.”

The four-time NBA champion and the US Vice President have formed a bond over the years based on mutual respect and admiration. Kamala Harris has spoken about her lifelong devotion to the Warriors as a fan, stating that the team “has been a constant source of joy and pride, for me and for so many of us.” Curry, in turn, highlighted the moment that the politician was sworn in as the 49 and the first female Vice President of the country through his official X (then Twitter) account. The player also attached a caption alongside the post that read: “Talk about a moment for my kids to see! How y’all doing this morning????”

Have an interesting take?

Stephen Curry’s remarks come just a few minutes before Team USA head coach Steve Kerr also sent out his support. In a brief statement, Kerr simply stated “Kamala Harris is a great candidate and I will support her.” With endorsements and support rallying around Harris from all sides, the sports world also seems to have joined in at the moment.

Does Stephen Curry have presidential aspirations?

Stephen Curry is not retiring from sports anytime soon. After all, at 36 years of age, he still has some good years remaining ahead of him. However, when discussing where the player could head post-retirement, ‘Politics’ certainly seems to be an option on the list. Along with having served as a board member on Michelle Obama’s ‘When We All Vote’ campaign to voicing his support during the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, the NBA player has played a brief role in public service. Furthermore, in his own words, Curry has not taken the highest office of the land out from his mind.

Back in March, the basketball star sat down for an interview with ‘CBS Mornings’ reporter Jericka Duncan. During the conversation, Curry gave out a “maybe” when asked if he sees himself as President in the future. Having already earned enough fame on the basketball court, he certainly wouldn’t be running for office just to make a name for himself.

“I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way that I can” said Curry during the interview. “When the reporter asked if a presidential bid could be seen from the player by at least 2028, he laughed and replied “Not that soon.”

Looking to not be any challenge to Kamala Harris, at least for the moment, the player is now aligning himself with the presumptive nominee with less than four months remaining for the election.
