“Desperate trades or desperate moves that deplete the future, there is a responsibility on allowing or keeping the franchise in a good space and good spot when it comes to where we leave this thing when we’re done”. Amidst the Warriors’ precarious position, Stephen Curry’s remarks about improving the roster without jeopardizing the team’s future started making waves.

With the Bay Area franchise having gone from a 12-6 record to 20-20, it was not a hidden fact that changes and improvements need to be made on the existing squad. However, not everyone was a fan of Stephen Curry’s suggestion, including renowned ESPN sportscaster Stephen A. Smith. Even if Curry had heard or not heard about what Smith said, his recent response would have certainly diminished the sportscaster’s viewpoint by a bit.

Stephen Curry participated in a presser in the aftermath of the recent Warriors-Timberwolves matchup. The Bay Area franchise won this recent game. However, it is just one step towards ensuring that the team does not fall into a more dire situation. The media may have felt this too.

It may be why a reporter asked the Three-Point leader if the recent performance was motivated due to “the national talking point”. Aka, the Warriors’ current standing. However, Curry denied this belief, stating that everything is being “micro-analyzed” these days. On top of that, he made it clear that any rumors going out there that the Warriors were “basically waving the white flag” did not have a standing.

“Anybody who thinks that I’m okay with just being an average basketball on (an) average basketball team that’s been saying, take whatever I should,” said Curry. “I still stand on it, but that doesn’t mean that you’re not in a situation where you’re trying to get better and make appropriate moves to help you do that. Mike knows that. We talked about it.”

Have an interesting take?

Stephen Curry’s remarks came after Stepehen A. Smith addressed the NBA star’s previous comments on not making ‘desperate’ moves. Speaking out on ‘First Take’ Smith revealed appreciating Curry’s ‘selflessness’. However, he revealed his belief that the Warriors do need to take a ‘desperate’ path while Curry is still playing.

After all, as Smith highlighted, “You can’t stop where you are at this pace when you’ve got a guy like Steph Curry. You’re wasting away. So even though I appreciate what he said, it’s hard to believe that he believes that”. The sportscaster revealed that if he was in Joe Lacob’s shoes, he would have thought “‘What’s the chances of at any time in the remainder of my lifetime as owner of the Golden State Warriors that I’m going to find me another Steph Curry?’ What’s the chances of me pulling that off? I’ve got to capitalize and max this out.”

Now, through his recent remarks, Curry made it clear that he does not want to be desperate. That does not mean that he doesn’t want the Warriors to change for the better at all. After all, if the organization goes into pursuing top talent in a hurry, it would cost trading away the current young talent. Things would be better for the short term only. While both Smith and Curry’s suggestions only speak in favor of the Warriors, only one takes into account the long-term.

Going down to a 20-20 slump would certainly lay the foundation for any NBA franchise to be desperate. Especially one that has won four championship titles in the last decade, with the most recent one being in 2022. However, Stephen Curry wants this process to go through with deep planning. As a result, he has shown that he is not willing to accept anything that might hinder that process.

Stephen Curry takes a shot at X users who suggest trade options: “Shut up a little bit”

It is not rare for NBA fans to get into the news about trade rumors by suggesting potential trade options. Several sites like ESPN, Spotrac, and FANSPO even provide a ‘Trade Machine’ for fans to experiment. Therefore, it was no surprise that suggestions started pouring on X about which player could join the Warriors. However, after the Warriors-Timberwolves game, Steph indicated that the only opinion that matters is that of the front office.

“All the twitter fingers whose got deals that we need to make, can kind of shut up a little bit and let us figure this thing out,” said Curry. “We know we can be competitive. We showed that toughness tonight. Obviously, every time is trying to find ways to get better, and for us, we’ve been great for a very long time. This is just a very unique year”.
