Would the Warriors have been better off trading for Paul George instead of keeping Curry?

After showcasing the highest level of basketball in the Olympics, Steph Curry will now be heading back to the Bay while the Warriors front office hopes for things to work out next season after a poor summer. They tried to bring in Paul George, but the realistic rumor was short-lived. This was followed by targeting Lauri Markkanen, whose trade talks stretched over weeks.

Unfortunately, the Finnish forward decided to stay in Utah, crushing the Warriors’ dreams of adding an All-Star alongside Steph Curry. But in recent news, Curry was well aware of the talks in the front office. “Curry was in on the recruitment of George. Dunleavy keeps him in the loop on the options and ultimate personnel decisions. Curry hasn’t, team sources said, expressed any signs of panic or unrest. But there’s a choice of action or inaction in the coming months that’ll give a clearer hint about his long-term mindset.” Athletic’s Slater reported.

This brings out two key takeaways. The main being Steph Curry’s mindset going into the next season. Yes, the roster isn’t fully equipped to win a championship this season, but the Chef is quite patient before he can judge the upcoming season’s trajectory. And secondly, failing to add major assets may just be alarming for the Warriors in more than one way. Of course, missing out on guys like PG and Markkanen was a bump in the road, but this might also concern Steph.

While trying to bring in Markkanen, the Warriors even considered adding a third party to facilitate Jazz’s interests. Still, to no avail. There is no doubt that the Warriors did all they could to bring Markkanen apart from adding Podz and JK to the table. However, at the end of the day, Steph needs a hand, and it has to be someone more than Podz, JK, or Hield. This brings the Warriors back to scouting their draft picks. The Dubs have 6 confirmed first-round picks and two second-round picks.

They can look to play around these along with someone like Moody, but there’s hardly a chance that the front office could land a considerable talent at this point. Now, how can they improve their chances of at least making the playoffs this year?

The Warriors have to prioritize Steph Curry

It seems that the Dubs have covered their long-term plans quite well. But unfortunately, they’ll miss out on a possible championship run if they don’t build around Steph. For the most part, the Dubs need only a reliable scorer alongside Steph. Moreover, it has to be someone who can complement Curry’s game and can gel well with Draymond. While Podz and JK are still young they’re still crucial assets if the Warriors are heading into the next season hoping to contend for the title.

Sadly enough, teams will come in asking for their youngsters, but then that’s where the front office has to play its best game. It will be interesting to see whether the Warriors manage to welcome a notable name before Steph’s tentative final year. What are your thoughts on Steph Curry’s mindset for the upcoming season?
