The three protagonists of this year’s Olympics, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James, are set to begin their own story. We’ve seen the Dream Team compete in the ’92 Olympics, led by Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan. Fast forward to 2024, and we’re witnessing the Dream Team of the modern era. Steph aligns with Magic as one of the greatest point guards ever. MJ and James continue the hot debate of the greatest of all time. These two groups summarize their respective eras and their dominance.
Steph, on the other hand, is especially excited to begin this Olympic tour. It’s his first appearance at the Olympics, and playing alongside his former teammate and Finals rival is a testament to how far they’ve come. However, Curry’s hidden fandom of MJ may have just been revealed during a recent interview.
“Obviously, me and LeBron have never been teammates in a competitive environment. And seeing how our games match, complement each other has been awesome so far… Me, K and LeBron took the picture that MJ, Larry Bird and Magic took. I can’t wait to get that on my wall and get them to sign it. It’s just an honor knowing what we’ve all done in our careers. The fact that we are the elder statesman with ’Bron still playing at a high level.”, Curry told Andscape.

Curry was referring to the picture MJ, Magic, and Bird took during the ’92 Olympics. The footage behind this photograph can be seen in Jordan’s documentary, ‘The Last Dance’. While there is no information on whether the league or a third-party production is shooting a documentary for this Olympic run, the iconic trio will remain unique among all the USAB teams formed. Curry’s wish to recreate the same moment as MJ and company will be something to ponder.
These three players combine for 10 championships, 7 MVP and Finals MVP awards, 44 All-Star selections, and countless records. This picture won’t just be an iconic masterpiece but also a full-circle moment for the three players.
Steph Curry, KD, and LeBron go a long way back
The Warriors versus Cavs rivalry is well-known. However, Durant and James clashed before in the Finals. In 2012, a young KD led the Thunder to the Finals alongside Westbrook and Harden. Four years later, Durant faced Steph and the Warriors, who made a huge comeback after being down 3-1. In the next series, LeBron James and company made one of the most historic comebacks in American sports.
As interesting as it sounds, it doesn’t end there. KD joined the Warriors and played two consecutive Finals against LeBron. After years of rivalry, the three have finally come together for the Olympics. Curry is eyeing his first Olympic gold but is realistic about the challenge. “I have a little bit of FIBA experience. The team that we have is amazing. Paris, where the world competition of basketball is right now, there is no cakewalk. It’s going to be tough for us to win.”, said Steph.
