For as long as the NBA lives on, the GOAT debate in each basketball position will persist. While LeBron James and Michael Jordan have arguably cemented their credibility as the greatest in their respective positions, the question regarding the greatest point guard ever still remains. The two names that pop up instantly in this conversation are Stephen Curry and Magic Johnson. But who has the edge against the other? His Airness and The King’s ex-teammate shared their opinion on the same.

Just days ago, Michael Jordan gave out his opinion on the greatest point guard debate. Given his era of basketball, he vouched for the Los Angeles Lakers legend, Magic Johnson in the conversation. However, LeBron James’ ex-teammate took this debate to a different level, bringing the Lakers legendary shooting guard, Kobe Bryant into the conversation.

Much like the GOAT debate between Michael Jordan and LeBron James, the greatest point guard debate will stand the test of time. As a completely perspective based debate, there is no conclusive answer to this question. However, The King’s Cleveland Cavaliers teammate, Richard Jefferson shared an uncanny opinion in this never-ending debate.

Jefferson joined MJ in giving Magic Johnson the title of the greatest point guard ever. However, he made an interesting comparison to share his disapproval of the Golden State Warriors superstar in this debate. He brought a shooting guard, Kobe Bryant into this conversation.

“Steph doesn’t want that smoke, as great as Steph is,” said Jefferson. “Steph could make a claim. He could make a claim, I didn’t say it would be accurate. Magic Johnson, it’s not even close.” He then went on to say, “The gap between him and Magic is, in my opinion, further than the gap between Kobe and Jordan, in my opinion.”

Although the 43-year-old brought two shooting guards into the conversation, he made an interesting claim. Jordan and Kobe Bryant are two of the most legendary shooting guards to ever grace the NBA. However, Jefferson feels that the gap between the two is closer than that between the two point guards, Johnson and Curry.

To add to this claim, Richard Frye, his former teammate used the two legends’ accolades in their illustrious careers. So how do they fare in this realm of the sport?

Do accolades work in Johnson’s favor?

In the same segment of the show, Jefferson mentioned why he gave Magic Johnson the edge over Curry. To add to his statements, Frye mentioned why Johnson deserves a stronger claim to the title. Based off of their personal achievements so far, the 40-year-old gave Johnson the edge. But do their achievements really give the Lakers legend the upper hand?

On the show, Frye mentioned, “His [Magic’s] stats are so astronomically wild, like the only rookie ever to get a Finals MVP, like MVP almost every single year, championship after championship, Steph is that dude [raising his hand to indicate superiority], but Steph ain’t THAT dude [raising his hand even higher, outstretched above his head]. He ain’t that. You ain’t him.”

By the looks of it, Johnson does have some phenomenal statistics to give him the edge over the Warriors guard. However, Curry does not lie too far from Buck’s records. The 34-year-old has so far earned two MVP awards, 4 championships, one Finals MVP and fittingly, a Magic Johnson Western Conference Finals MVP award.

Clearly, several claims support both legends’ credibility in the GOAT point guard debate. However, their influence and legacy will stand the test of time, no matter who emerges as a greater point guard.
