When you hear that a game saw 100+ points scored, you’d naturally assume it’s a team that did it. Right? Well, you know what they say about assuming. And proving that saying right is Mesrobian’s Nick Khatchikian who broke a decades-old state record during Pico RIvera’s Mesrobian’s 119-25 decimation of Waverly on Thursday.
Nick Khatchikian transcended to a different level as he scored 102 points in 22 minutes. The rest of the Mesrobian locker room only scored 17 of their 119 points. He could have gone even further had he not been removed in the third quarter after smashing the record.
The previous record, somewhat poetically, also belonged to a former Mesrobian player. Tigran Grigoryan, now an assistant coach on the Mesrobian team, scored 100 during the 2002/03 season while playing for them. Perhaps it was Khatchikian’s desire to live up to his coach’s example that spurred him on to shatter this incredible record.

Interestingly, Nick’s twin, Dylan Khatchikian also broke a state record in the win over Waverly. Dylan’s 35 assists in the win broke the state record for most assists in a game and equaled the national record for the same.
The brothers will be delighted for each other after shattering two different records on the same night. But they weren’t the only ones happy for each other. Their heroics gained them a lot of attention, even from a certain ‘King’. So let’s see what he had to say about the history in the making that unfolded in front of him.

One of the greatest players to have ever set foot on the court, LeBron James was also in awe of Nick and Dylan Khatchikian’s performances on Thursday night. He interacted with a post on Instagram about the boys’ performance made by SportsCenter. It seems even the King was impressed that someone broke the state high school record in his state.
“I wanna see the game film!” read LeBron’s comment with a film camera emoji nestled alongside it. Never one to miss a major occurrence in the sport, the King was bound to find out eventually. However, you can see the delight he took in commenting on this. Nevertheless, LeBron wasn’t the only one amazed by Nick Khatchikian’s accomplishment. Their coach also commented on the boys’ performance after the match.
Mesrobian head coach, Mike Gabriel revealed that he knew Nick Khatchikian would be shattering the state points record in the first half itself. Now, under normal circumstances, this would be perceived as a coach bragging with the benefit of hindsight. However, it’s natural for the coach to make such a bold statement, when you remember that it was 79-0 at the end of the second quarter with Nick scoring all of Mesrobian’s points.

“When he got 40 points in the first quarter and we saw where he was at half, we decided as a team to let him go for it and everyone was on board,” he said. “It was just insane to watch,” he finished his praise of Khatchikian.
With 102 points scored in 22 minutes, Nick Khatchikian is sure to become a sensation soon. You’d expect the next big thing in basketball to emerge from the NBA or the various NCAA teams. But it seems that the 6-foot-2 Mesrobian guard is the next superstar in the wings!
