Joel Embiid is yet to step on the court this season. He’ll be missing the 4th straight game for the Philadelphia 76ers. Apart from facing knee problems, the hooper also faces an investigation, conducted by the NBA. Injuries have plagued the 7x All-Star’s career, that’s a known fact. However, after the New York Knicks knocked them out of the playoffs, he made a significant decision. The Philly side decided on a new “normal” for their star center, as he’s rarely been there, especially when they need him the most.
After the 1st round playoff exit last season, the hooper texted Daryl Morey, “We got to do whatever it takes to make sure that in the postseason I’m healthy,” explained Embiid during media day. But “whatever” they’re doing has landed them in trouble.
Ahead of the 2023-24 season, the NBA introduced an updated ‘player participation policy’ aimed at reducing the number of missed games by star players, especially during high-profile matchups or nationally televised games. The policy does allow exceptions, such as when a player misses consecutive games because of a legitimate long-term injury, illness, or other medical condition.

But the Sixers aren’t being fined for this. Nick Nurse, the Philly boss, explained that Joel Embiid’s absence was part of the team’s “plan,” emphasizing he hadn’t suffered a new injury. Daryl Morey, Head of Basketball Operations added that the Philly side was putting Embiid’s health first, focusing on keeping him ready for the playoffs rather than the early regular-season games.
According to league sources via The Athletic, as reported, the NBA’s investigation “focused on the contrast” in the Sixers’ public remarks. While team officials had stated that Embiid hadn’t experienced any setbacks or new injuries before the season, they also publicly and openly discussed plans to keep him out of back-to-back games for the season. How can a big franchise like the Sixers, mix up their statements- the Head Coach says something else and the Head of Basketball Operations contrasts it? Simple media training could have saved the Sixers some money ($100,000!) that they sure could’ve used to clear all the hefty luxury tax they’re paying.
Which approach is the correct way forward: Lebron James’ or Joel Embiid’s?
The 2023 MVP Joel Embiid, had recently said that he might never play back-to-backs. While on the other hand, at 39 years old and stepping into his 22nd NBA season, LeBron James continues to play with the same dedication. While The Process may now be relieved after contemplating having a reduced schedule, King James has firmly stated he plans to play every game, even on consecutive nights, with no intention of sitting out. That’s a stark difference in mentality or difference in what, really speaking?

Joel Embiid’s decision not to play back-to-backs led to widespread criticism regarding his dedication to both the team and the game. NBA legend Charles Barkley was among those who spoke out against the experienced hooper’s position.
Chuck openly expressed his disappointment, saying, “I was so disappointed in Joel Embiid saying he wasn’t going to play back-to-back games. You’re one of the 3, 4, or 5 best players in the world. You cannot say as a leader of that team, ‘I’m not going to play certain games.'” Barkley underscored that Embiid’s words, especially at the season’s start, sent the wrong message to everyone in the league.

The contrasting ‘attitudes’ of LeBron James and Joel Embiid fuel a broader discussion in the NBA around player rest and load management. As teams grow increasingly cautious about preserving players’ health through the season, fans and analysts will still expect top leaders to be present in every game, as the driving force, especially during important matchups.
LeBron James has earned a reputation for reliability in the NBA, missing games only when injured. His commitment to playing each game sets an example for younger stars, underscoring the value of dedication and leadership. In contrast, Joel Embiid’s remarks have led some to question his commitment to leading the Sixers, a team that will need his consistent presence if they aim to compete for a championship.
