Playing without their best player Donovan Mitchell and other key players because of injury, the Cavs couldn’t do much against the Boston Celtics in Game 5. And Cleveland’s Cinderella story ended at the TD Garden tonight as the Jayson Tatum-led squad blew them out 113-98 to complete the Gentleman sweep. Now, with the Cavs heading back home, their head coach JB Bickerstaff, who led the team to the Conference SFs for the first time since the LeBron James era, reportedly faces a cloudy future. Well, some pointed it to be “premature” while many were just bemused.

Minutes after the Celtics eliminated the Cavs, NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski made a rather confusing tweet talking about the future of JB in Cleveland. “ESPN Sources: After an Eastern Conference semifinal loss to Celtics with short-handed lineup, Cavaliers plan to take time to evaluate coach JB Bickerstaff’s future, but organization remains fond of him and marketplace is sparse of proven candidates. There will be a lot of conversations on different ways to proceed for a franchise that reached Eastern semis for first time since 2018.”

Despite being over sixty words, Woj’s tweet practically provided no solid information about what will actually happen to Bickerstaff’s job. Yes, JB wasn’t able to lead the Cavs to any Final, but he did help them win forty-eight games during the regular season, which was good enough to grab the fourth seed. Moreover, with a 170-159 winning record in Cleveland, JB Bickerstaff’s coaching career has had an upward trend since he joined four years ago.

Just last year, he ended the team’s four-year playoff drought and finally got them past the aftereffects of losing LeBron. And this year, he took them one step further by winning a series and reaching the semis.

More importantly, it was not his fault that multiple star players on the team got injured and the Cavs had to compete against the top seed undermanned. So, although Bickerstaff couldn’t get them over the hump this year, the Cavs’ best option might be to stay with him for at least another season.

The Cavs faithful stand behind JB Bickerstaff

After Wojnarowski’s tweet left the main question unanswered about whether or not Bickerstaff would still have a job after this summer, confused fans took to social media to support the Cavs head coach while also questioning Woj’s sources. One confused individual sarcastically commended the veteran insider for the job he did, “‘Team ends season and will consider future’ is a shocking report good job woj.”

Sharing a similar sentiment, another fan called out Woj for providing no actual information despite the lengthy tweet. It is obvious from this season’s outcome that the Cavs have a decision to make about their roster and leadership, so Woj’s tweet was “a bunch or words and saying a lot of nothing,” wrote a fan.

The same person took the intensity a notch higher after making a relatable analogy, sparking many into a sense of nostalgia. “This is the paragraph you put in your essay before your conclusion to hit the word limit,” he wrote.

Another fan hilariously posted a viral meme of popstar Adele confused on social media, referring to Bickerstaff’s current reaction after reading Woj’s tweet about his job.

Standing in support of JB, one fan believed it would be premature to fire him this summer as he has done a great job with the team in such a short span. Interestingly, the head coach signed an extension with the Cavs just a few years ago. On paper, he’s destined to run through with the team till the 2026-27 season.

And one fan brought a new perspective to the table claiming, “Just say if LeBron goes to Cleveland, JB is out”.

Yes, there have been rumors about LeBron James returning to Cleveland for the final stretch of his career as his contract situation in LA remains pending. So, many fans are speculating that he would prefer a coaching change if he does eventually join the Cavs again. However, that idea might be a little too far-fetched.
