Can Shaq really take on Jeff Bezos in the Celtics ownership battle, or is it a lost cause?

While the Boston Celtics were busy celebrating their record 18 title, owner Wyc Grousbeck left the city stunned by announcing that he would be selling the coveted franchise in the coming months. Sure enough, fans began wondering who would take over next. Even LeBron James’ name popped up in the conversation. However, a person who is even feared by Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal now tops the list of favorites. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos! But his history of NBA ownership setbacks might give Bron a sigh of relief.

It was only two years ago, while the Phoenix Suns were on sale, that Bezos developed an interest in becoming the new owner of the franchise. Knowing that the world’s second richest man was on the hunt, Shaq publicly admitted on TMZ to not entering the bidding war despite his desire to own an NBA team, “As far as trying to own a whole team by myself, and go up against him? Let me tell you something: I’m scared of Big Man JB. Shaq O’Neal is scared of Big Man JB!” However, Bezos eventually lost the battle to Mat Ishbia, who bought the Suns at a record $4 billion.

But with the defending Champions now up for grabs, Bezos might enter the market again. He reportedly recently sold $5 billion worth of Amazon shares, which many believed were to get the money ready to buy the Celtics, as Wyc is expected to sell the team at $6 billion. However, he could face tough competition from LeBron James because Fenway Sports Group (Red Sox owners) is a potential bidder, and the Laker owns a 1% stake in the company.

While Bezos’ itself net worth is intimidating, his previous failure in the Suns’ pursuit would give Bron the confidence that he might just be able to pull this off. Even if he doesn’t, he still has that Vegas dream to look forward to. Don’t you remember? Let’s jog your memory.

Yes, becoming a partial owner of the Boston Celtics would be a historic move for King James. More so because he is still an active player in the league. However, if Bezos beats him, LeBron will have a clear path and could shift his focus to achieving his ultimate dream of owning a franchise in Las Vegas. Over the last few years, he has made his intentions clear about wanting a team in the Sin City. “It’s wonderful. It’s the best fanbase in the world and I would love to bring a team here at some point. That’ll be amazing,” he said in an interview two years ago.

Then, he shared a similar sentiment while he was in Vegas for the inaugural in-season tournament last year. Moreover, with the NBA finally inking its new media rights deal, Adam Silver has said that league expansion would be his next focus. So, LeBron James might not be too far away from achieving his dream. Although owning a team in Vegas will cost him a fortune as the deal is expected to cross the $7 billion mark, LBJ is likely to pull out all the stops to make it happen and could even partner with FSG or Red Bull to make it happen. And it looks like we will soon see LeBron as an owner in the NBA one way or another. What are your thoughts?
