Warriors fans cast your minds back to November 12, 2018. Golden State lost to the Clippers in overtime on that night, but the headlines were dominated by what happened at the end of the regulation time. Kevin Durant got into a verbal altercation with Draymond Green after he failed to get a shot off at the end of regulation, which sent the game to overtime. Green then had a few choice of words for Durant and reportedly told him, “We don’t need you. We won without you. Leave.” That is exactly what Durant did after that season, as he joined the Brooklyn Nets. The aftershocks of this incident continued until Green mended their relationship in an offseason conversation last year.

Things between the two stalwarts escalated in 2023 after Green struck Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkić during a Warriors-Suns matchup on December 12. After the game, Durant said he hoped “Draymond gets the help that he needs,” which according to Green “really p****d” him off. But since then things have been getting better and despite Durant turning down the chance to reunite with Green in a midseason trade from the Suns, he will be soon teaming up with his former teammate.

The official Instagram account of ‘The Draymond Green Show’ made a new post and it featured a screenshot of the upcoming episode, which should not have been too unusual. The only difference was that it highlighted that Green’s next guest is set to be Kevin Durant! The caption of the post read, “Lots to talk about.” While the duo have done side-by-side interviews earlier, and played countless games against each other since Durant’s Warriors exit, the upcoming episode will mark the Suns legend’s first appearance on the show.

After he left the Warriors in 2019, KD never admitted to the friction being the primary reason for his exit. Still, it did not stop people from speculating. Therefore, several Warriors fans might believe that the bad taste stemming from that discontent is what prevented a reunion between Durant and the Bay Area franchise after he turned down a midseason trade from the Phoenix Suns to the Warriors before the February deadline period. However, both Green and KD might have just brushed aside those concerns and it has got the fans hoping for a reunion on court again.

However, this is not the first time the two former teammates will share a podcast stage. Back in 2021, Green appeared on KD’s “The ETCs” podcast to share his take on what happened on that fateful night.

Green said, “I got the rebound and I took off up the court. K is clapping for the ball and I’m taking off. I’m driving up the court. In my mind, K is about to come in for the trail, and I’m about to pitch it back. He is about to walk into the 3, we’re going home, we got a game tomorrow. This is how I’m envisioning this whole play happening. As I turn to go across the court for the pitch back, K has completely stopped coming [laughter]. So I dribble the ball off my foot looking for him. The s–t went all wrong.”

Durant then chimed in with his version of the events and pointed out what went wrong. “In my mind, this is how I played it out. We got the stop, I’m grabbing the rebound, as soon as I cross halfcourt I’m shooting it. That was the disconnect. That was it. I wanted the moment, Draymond saw it in a different way. That was the clash,” he mentioned. While both of them saw things differently in the build-up to the moment, they were on the same page about one thing: Golden State Warriors fumbled the ball.

In 2021, on Bleacher Report’s Chips series, the duo seemed to be in agreement that the Warriors didn’t handle the situation well. Green asked Durant “for his own personal sanity” if their altercation was the reason why he left Golden State. Durant answered, “It wasn’t the argument. It was the way that everybody, (coach) Steve Kerr, tried to act like it didn’t happen. (General manager) Bob Myers tried to just discipline you and think that that would put a mask over everything.”

According to Durant, he didn’t feel like he and Green were able to resolve their issues because of the way the franchise handled the conflict. After their altercation, Green was fined and suspended for a game without pay by the Warriors. Green also agreed with Durant that if their conflict had been managed better by the team, things wouldn’t have escalated.

What’s your perspective on:

Could KD's return to the Warriors reignite their championship glory, or is it just wishful thinking?

Have an interesting take?

“In my opinion, they f—ed it up,” Green said. “They’re like, ‘We’re going to suspend you for this game.’ I laughed. I literally laughed in their face, and Bob said to me, he said, ‘Wow, that was not the reaction I was looking for or expected.’

Despite this, their relationship hit a rough patch following Durant’s comments on Green after the Suns-Warriors game in 2023. But Durant said they ironed out their differences in a conversation last year during the offseason.

“I saw KD in the offseason, and we chopped it up, and man to man, face to face, we chopped it up,” Green said on his podcast in December last year. “Told him how I felt, he told me how he felt, and he was like, damn, I didn’t think it would be seen that way, I didn’t think it would be taken that way, and we talked about it. Then for him to come out and say this, when you share disdain with something that someone does, don’t be a hypocrite when they say something well, you don’t appreciate that.”

Durant had earlier clarified that he meant no ill will, but Green was hurt at these words since he cared about what his former teammate thought. While we cannot say they are friends at the moment, it appears the tension between the two has dissipated and the Warriors fans are dreaming again.

NBA community calls for a Kevin Durant-Warriors reunion after interview reveal: “He coming home”

One social media user interpreted the review as something more than what it meant. Similarly to an art enthusiast. After all, he took to the comments section and wrote “He coming home.”

Just weeks ago, Durant turned down the chance to come “home” despite reportedly talking with Stephen Curry. Anthony Slater reported, that whatever was discussed between the duo “convinced him a reunion was extremely unlikely, no matter how much the Golden State Warriors ownership group and front office collectively “underestimated” Durant’s coldness toward a return, as one team source put it.” In the end, the Warriors acquired Jimmy Butler from the Golden State Warriors.

While it was speculated that he didn’t want a return due to the manner in which his last tenure ended at the franchise, Durant was quick to dismiss this narrative. “People talk crazy about me all the time,” Durant told  ESPN’s Malika Andrews on “NBA Today” last week. “That’s not the reason why I didn’t want to come back, I just didn’t want to get traded midway through the season. It was nothing against my time with the Warriors, or I heard because I didn’t like Draymond. At the end of the day, I just didn’t want to move and I wanted to see it through with my team in Phoenix and see what we can do the rest of the season. I’m glad I’m still there.”

Nevertheless, after Draymond’s podcast hinted at Durant coming on their show, fans have once again started dreaming of his return to Bay Area, with one individual writing “Oh KD is def coming back in the off-season”.

Since Kevin Durant left the Golden State Warriors, things have slowly improved between the duo. Back in December 2024, Green revealed “I saw KD in the offseason, and we chopped it up, and man to man, face to face, we chopped it up. Told him how I felt, he told me how he felt, and he was like, damn, I didn’t think it would be seen that way, I didn’t think it would be taken that way, and we talked about it”. This reconciliation has now resulted in the Suns star appearing on Green’s show.

One social media user used the preview to take a dig at the rumors he/she was hearing. They did so by writing “And people said kd hate draymond lol (crying emojis)”.

Another individual asked in the comments section “KD coming back???”. One can never say what the future holds. Kevin Durant is 36 years of age and may want to spend his remaining years with the same team. At the same time, the current Suns squad has not proven themselves to be a championship-contending team. The team currently holds the 11 seed on the Western Conference chart.

Whether it would be a discussion about their feud, or the NBA as a whole, there is no denying that the upcoming episode would be a must-watch. Therefore, one individual wrote, “Boy this tea finna be hot (laughing emojis)”. It surely will be!

The episode will draw a lot of eyeballs to Draymond Green’s podcast, which is only good for business. But beyond that, it could mean that the relationship between the two individuals is now healthy with the possibility of them sharing the same lockerroom some day still alive.

Overall, the majority of reactions fully endorsed Kevin Durant’s reunion with Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors. As specified, there is no indication to prove that the same will happen. Therefore, all one can do now is just enjoy the upcoming episode.
