Entertainers and comedians might need to go on LinkedIn to find a new gig because Serena Williams left everyone spellbound with her antics at the ESPY Awards. The 23 x Grand Slam winner didn’t hesitate to keep her humor flowing while talking about the James family. Well, it wasn’t just them, but also two other NBA stars, who also fell prey to her humor. Last year, LeBron James stole the limelight with his thunderous speech at the ESPY Awards, but this year, Williams turned it all into gags.
She seemed to have everything in her grip, in control of her new-found artistic side, which is pretty tough to grab hold of. Comedy doesn’t come naturally to everyone, after all. But her opening monologue at the event, dedicated to the stars of the James clan was enough for us all to keep us wanting more. Not only did she take a dig at LeBron, but also at the family’s rising star, Bronny James.
Williams wished him luck for his debut, but at the same time, cracked a ‘hairline’ joke. She said, “I truly hope Bronny has a long career… so long that he will see his hairline recede, then, miraculously unrecede, like dad.” Completely unexpected!

Roasting like this, from one athlete to another is pretty rare these days. And taking it in good spirits, like Bronny did, is even more rare. And so he did. The 19YO entered the league with his hairline intact, and we can all hope that he will keep going the same way. For LeBron James, he also seemed to be unbothered by, or we would have had a tweet or two coming in from him by now. Receding hairline or not, Bron has 4 rings.
And it’s not just Serena, who took potshots at LeBron James on his receding hair. Once, the superstar’s teammate, Anthony Davis, himself made fun of James’ hair. In a challenge where he was asked to identify the Lakers’ player sketched by a kid on a piece of paper, AD decided to let loose his humor, as he jokingly said, “He’s [LeBron in the painting] kind of going bald right there. And I kind of see the resemblance. So that’s what really gave it away.”

This time, Serena Williams had company. She again stepped on the stage alongside her sister, Venus, and actress, Quinta Brunson. Firstly, she took a sly dig at Draymond Green and Rudy Gobert for their on-court ugly brawl from the last season. Speaking of the greatness of women’s sports, she said, “Women’s games are extremely physical.” And her sister, Venus Williams, backed it up, saying, “Female athletes get choke-slammed and we keep on playing.” But, before anyone could expect the next line, Brunson threw a punch line, “Yes, Rudy Gobert could never.”
Well, Serena didn’t give the audience to sink into the joke, as she followed it with another whip. She continued, “LeBron wants to win with his son on his team. I won with my daughter in my belly. I think we know which one is way more impressive,” leaving the crowd to erupt with a loud roar.
Seven years ago, Serena Williams stunned the sporting world with an insane feat. Even though she is one Grand Slam title short to stand on par with Margaret Court to secure the all-time record for most Grand Slam wins, she made her last title win a memorable one. She won her seventh Australian Open title while carrying her daughter, Alexis, in her belly.

Truly a magical feat. However, at the same time, LeBron James’ achievement isn’t also an easy feat. The 39-year-old kept himself on the top of the game for 21 years and now, he is all set to share the court with his son in his 22nd season.
