Gloria James gave birth to LeBron James when she was just 16 years old. Growing up without his original father, The Kid from Akron adopted his mother’s surname. Gloria had to carry the burdens of parenting alone, overcoming several challenges along the way. Sadly, she lost her mother to a cardiac arrest when LeBron was only three years old, leaving her to raise her son alone. Despite the difficulties, she was adamant about providing for her child. Financial adversities and continuous relocation defined LeBron’s early years.

After Gloria’s mother died, the city confiscated their home, finally resulting in its destruction when LeBron was only 5 years old. This occurrence marked the start of a difficult chapter in their lives. LeBron and his mother relocated 12 times in the following three years. Changing schools became common, making it difficult for The Akron Hammer to form long-lasting connections. He missed approximately 100 days of school in fourth grade because of transportation issues. Despite these obstacles, one constant thing in LeBron’s childhood was his mother’s unshakable presence, who always placed him first.

But Gloria James eventually made a heartbreaking decision when LeBron reached 9 years old. She understood that in order to provide for her kid, she needed the security and grounding of a family. Hence, she prioritized his needs before her own. And she left LeBron’s care to Frank and Pam Walker, a couple who recognized his talent. LeBron James opened up in his book about the fear of losing his mother.

He said, “I became afraid that one day I would wake up and she would be gone forever. It’s really all I cared about when I was growing up, waking up and knowing that my mom was still alive and still by my side. I already didn’t have a father, and I didn’t want to be without both my parents.”
