Changing schools became common, making it difficult for The Akron Hammer to form long-lasting connections. He missed approximately 100 days of school in fourth grade because of transportation issues. But Gloria James eventually made a heartbreaking decision when LeBron reached 9 years old. She understood that in order to provide for her kid, she needed the security and grounding of a family. Hence, she prioritized his needs before her own. And she left LeBron’s care to Frank and Pam Walker, a couple who recognized his talent. LeBron James opened up in his book about the fear of losing his mother.

He said, “I became afraid that one day I would wake up and she would be gone forever. It’s really all I cared about when I was growing up, waking up and knowing that my mom was still alive and still by my side. I already didn’t have a father, and I didn’t want to be without both my parents.”

But as Frank Walker became a father figure in James’s life he started getting on the right track.

LeBron James moved into the Walkers’ house and stayed there for a year, seeing his mother on weekends. The Walker family’s discipline, stability, and caring atmosphere had a great influence on him. He accepted the experience, valuing the stability of a stable family life and the chance to be a member of a loving family. LeBron James began his basketball career while staying with the Walker family. His football coach and mentor, Frank Walker, persuaded him to join a basketball team he coached. This was LeBron’s first expedition into the world of basketball, which eventually became his true calling.

LeBron’s basketball skills immediately became apparent, and he continued to play through high school at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron.
