The New York Knicks filed a lawsuit against the Toronto Raptors and its parent company, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). They said that a former club employee stole trade secrets, scouting secrets, and films. The Raptors’ new coaching staff, including head coach and former Knicks staffer Ikechukwu “Ike” Azotam, is directly named in the case. The Knicks are suing for more than $10 million in damages, claiming that Silver is impartial due to his connection with Larry Tanenbaum. He is the league’s Chairperson of the Board of Governors and a minority stakeholder of the Toronto Raptors.
This lawsuit, however, came to light after the Raptors defeated the Knicks 113-104 on April 10th, 2022. The Knicks claim that the Raptors could beat them only because they had access to the team’s personal information, giving them an unfair edge. A spokesperson from the Knicks said, “We were the victim of a theft of proprietary and confidential files, which is a clear violation of criminal and civil law, and we remain confident that the Court will decide in our favor in this matter”.

Their complaint includes things like stolen documents, including hundreds of recordings, scouting reports, play diagrams, and personnel notes. The Knickerbockers not only look to gain monetary penalties but also a court order to prevent the Raptors from exploiting their sensitive documents. This lawsuit can disturb the balance of power and reshape the NBA’s whole environment for years to come.
