As the NBA Draft of 2024 draws near, the San Antonio Spurs have a few rumors to their name. Their possible picks have garnered a lot of speculation, considering their #1 from last year, Victor Wembanyama. This year, Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young and Kentucky Wildcats’ Reed Sheppard have been churning through their rumor mill. The stakes are high, with San Antonio holding two great picks in hand. Their prospects for the upcoming draft seem promising and experts think it’s an affirmative deal from “the basketball perspective”.

Several factors may be attracting the team to the star player. On Windhort’s podcast, ‘Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective’, he discussed these factors along with Tim McMahon. These factors could include the Spurs’ current cap space and their ability to utilize them on the Atlanta Hawks’ picks that they currently own. One of the panelists said, “I have talked to people who know Wemby who have indicated he is at least intrigued by that idea”.

“Intrigued by the idea and pounding the table are two very different things and I have no idea whether Gregg Popovich would be intrigued by the idea. Everybody I talk to, says, ‘Hey from a basketball perspective, I think it could really work…Say what you want about Trae Young, the man can run, pick, and roll and is one of the two best lob passers in the league,” he concluded.

Trae Young’s offense, combined with Wembanyama’s defense, could offer the balance the team currently demands. The Spurs have exciting prospects, including the much sought-after No. 4 pick, which presents an exciting possibility to reorganize. They notably also own the No. 8 pick as well, which heightens anticipation. Nonetheless, he went on to say, is Trae the answer to San Antonio’s current requirements? Here’s why he may fit well in the roster.

With a Victor Wembanyama affirmation, does Trae Young fulfill the Spurs’ needs?

Both Brian Windhorst and Tim MacMahone expressed uncertainty about Spurs’ Head Coach, Gregg Popovich’s endorsement of the team acquiring Trae Young. Trae’s gameplay might not fit Popovich’s preferences and that would prove to be a decisive factor. However, at the same time, Trae and Wembanyama’s partnership could be a game changer. The Spurs are currently looking to build a well-rounded team around their star rookie.

Notably, they’re in dire need of a Point Guard. They ranked #26 on the Offense Rating leaderboard this season with a rating of 109.3. A well-rounded roster could solve their problems, and Trae Young brought up his team’s rating to 119.5! Young has averaged 25.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 10.8 assists this season. Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama has averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Young’s fluid movements would complement and enhance Wemby’s play. In a way, it could further unlock their potential. But would he move to the Spurs for a better shot at the title? If the star player is considering this change, then he may need to be okay with the fact that he will not be basking in the spotlight. Victor Wembanyama is currently the face of the Spurs and the Hawks star will have to settle for playing ‘side-kick.’
