Sabrina Ionescu meeting Stephen Curry—Is she the future face of women's basketball?

The sight of Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu competing at the 2024 All-Star Game is an image that will be etched in the minds of hoops fans for years to come. In the Warriors star’s own words, “For us to deliver a show like that, it was perfect.” With Bay Area set to host the next All-Star Game, rumors have already been floating about a possible rematch. Before that, however, the duo is currently taking to social media to swell the hearts of both NBA and WNBA fans alike after they recently met in front of the cameras!

Stephen Curry was present during the recent game between Ionescu’s Liberty and the Aces. As expected, the WNBA sharpshooter did not choose to disappoint, dropping 14 points to help Liberty win by a 4-point margin. No one was more happy about the win as the NBA’s three-point leader, as he was captured hugging Ionescu after the matchup while sharing some kind words with her. Sabrina, however, did not any waste time as she quickly retweeted this clip on her X account.

Along with Steph Curry, other players like Klay Thompson, Dereck Lively II, and Devin Booker were also present. The NBA fraternity came in to cheer on and send their love to the New York Liberty, who are currently leading the points table with a 29-6 record. Much of this has been due to Sabrina Ionescu’s contribution, as she has managed to average 19.4 points, 6.0 assists, and 4.6 rebounds in the ongoing series. According to Yahoo! Sports, Ionescu is even in a tight race for consideration for the MVP award.

The competition is tough, with A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and even Caitlin Clark being top contenders. Having played a significant role in defeating A’ja Wilson’s Aces just a few hours ago, the 3x WNBA All-Star may have accumulated some more votes in her favor.

Also, we didn’t get to witness the sharpshooter duo since the iconic All-Star weekend and this moment was certainly momentous enough to garner a whole lot of attention. Before long, social media users had descended onto the comments section to share their reactions.

NBA enthusiasts celebrate Stephen Curry-Sabrina Ionescu reunion: “SF Bay Area native with SF Bay Area superstar!”

One individual was certainly emotional upon witnessing the reunion, taking it as a sign that Curry was “Passing the torch. I’m crying mehn. My goat’s gonna be an MVP one day I believe it.”

Have an interesting take?

One user may have ignited a bit of hilarious in the wholesome moment by stating “Oh great, so now shell join the warriors….ion trust steph.” It is no secret that the Warriors have been facing a crisis in the last few months. Getting eliminated early without making it to the playoffs, along with losing Klay Thompson who had been with the franchise for 13 years, their situation was at a low point.

However, changes have been made to improve the roster, as the Warriors recently took in veterans Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson to help Steph on the offensive and defensive front. While Hield already brings with him enough three-pointer shooting experience, maybe someone like Sabrina Ionescu could bridge the gap left by Thompson’s exit.

Another social media user highlighted the growing popularity of the women’s league by stating, “WNBA is putting us on notice.” If this past regular season has told us anything, it is that the commenter may not entirely be in the wrong. According to a report by the league itself, the WNBA opened the 2024 season with the highest attendance in 26 years and the highest viewership rate ever!

The monthly active users of the WNBA app reportedly rose by 613% year-over-year, with League Pass subscriptions almost tripling in the initial two weeks of the ongoing season. Much of this has been credited to the ‘Caitlin Clark’ effect, as the rookie’s debut season is bringing the highest level of views and attendance. However, by putting out stellar performances, Sabrina Ionescu is setting the standards that should be the norm for not just her peers, but basketball players everywhere.

One individual highlighted an ironic fact by stating “SF Bay Area native with SF Bay Area superstar! In NYC though!”

The fact that the two individuals who share such a history with the Californian city meet after such long gaps is astonishing. However, with the 2025 All-Star game set to take place in Bay Area now, there would be no excuse for Sabrina Ionescu to avoid the game.

Since the success of the 2024 All-Star weekend, expectations have been on Ionescu to make a return. Even NBA commissioner Adam Silver urged her regarding the same. He said, “There’s gotta be a rematch in San Francisco!”

The WNBA hooper held the three-point contest in high regard, as she would later say, “We (Curry and Ionescu) went up there and we shot, and kind of proved to the world that it doesn’t matter where you come from, what league you’re playing in, if you have a talent and you want to work really hard, you can go out and accomplish whatever that is that you want to go out and do.” Therefore, nothing is stopping her to opt for a rematch.
