Remember back when Russell Westbrook was in OKC? The Beastbrook spent 11 seasons with the Thunder, making it to the MVP conversations five times. As dominant of a scorer as he was, Westbrook’s defense was often overlooked. If anything, Russ is still one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. Although the guard is 35, he’s still a solid defender, compensating for his former role of being a primary scorer. Now Mr. Triple Double will be a valuable veteran presence in Denver. However, head coach Michael Malone believes that the former MVP can replace KCP’s spot, but not as a shooter.
KCP was a reliable shooter as well as a defender. While Russ isn’t always the first option when it comes to outside shooting, Russ can definitely fill in as a defensive powerhouse when it comes to replacing the Nuggets’ former shooting guard. Malone’s recent words on Russ’s role as a defender seem promising in relation to Denver’s defensive issues.
“I think when people talk about Russell Westbrook, no one really mentions defense. They mention how quick he is, how explosive he is, the rebounding, the playmaking. When we went back and watched as a staff, his defense last year with the Clippers, end of games he was on the opposing team’s best player every night. You have a guy that you can close games with, Russell Westbrook, who knows the league, knows personnel, has the respect of the officials, and has a competitive, ‘I’m gonna get in your sh*t’ mindset that I love,” said Malone.

During his best years in OKC, Westbrook averaged 2 steals per game while also putting up 10+ assists each game. Not only that but in recent years, Westbrook has proven his talents best on the defensive end. Now, teaming up with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, Russ’ addition as a defensive powerhouse will only balance things out on the defensive end. But this doesn’t overshadow Westbrook’s ability to score. When consistent, Russ is a dangerous offensive threat to look out for.
Russell Westbrook is more confident than ever
Playing for the Nuggets, Westbrook is looking forward to a great year after a few rough seasons in LA. Despite all the hate, Russ is up for the challenge, joining one of the toppers of the West. “Over the course of my career, I’ve been booed and all that stuff everywhere else, but I take it as a sign of respect just like the late Kobe Bryant,” said Westbrook. It is pretty clear that Russ is optimistic going into his 17th season. After coming off the bench in LA for the past two years, it will be interesting to watch Russ finally get the minutes he deserves alongside an immersive roster.

Moreover, guys like Aaron Gordon and MPJ will be among the players leading this franchise to the promised land after two years. Their 2023 title run was well-deserved, but the Nuggets aren’t looking to stop anytime soon. With Westbrook’s addition, the Nuggets will look to capitalize on the veteran’s talents this upcoming season, while also considering his staggering confidence. The Nuggets will kick things off next Friday facing the Celtics for their first preseason game.
