Often dubbed the “Oscars of the East Coast,” the Met Gala is undeniably the hottest social event to take place in the heart of New York City. Needless to say, invites to such an event are hard to come by. Yes, even if you are a renowned celebrity. While it’s fun to know who’s attending, what’s even more interesting is the list of people barred from attending the fundraiser. It’s just former US President Donald Trump – that’s the list. It ends there. According to Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who has been responsible for curating the Met Gala guest list since 1999, the only person who is banned indefinitely from the event is Donald Trump.

While the Met is inarguably the industry’s most anticipated fashion event, it has suffered a bad rep in recent times, with celebrities boycotting the event due to bad experiences. Yet, despite the ban on Donald Trump, the LA Clippers star, worth $375 million, showers immense praise on the charity event.

Russell Westbrook is as popular for his daring and distinctive personal style as he is for churning out triple-doubles. From torn-up shirts to kilts and long skirts, Westbrook’s gender-neutral style is a facet of his personality that he boldly shares with the world. Besides sporting events, Westbrook has had the privilege to grace fashion’s grandest stage – the Met Gala.

Westbrook, who has attended the gala two times in 2021 and 2022 has nothing but deep appreciation for the NY fundraiser. Russell Westbrook recently appeared in Vogue’s “Life in Looks” YouTube series, where he looked back on the evolution of his fashion sense, right from his “first custom suit” that he wore the day he was drafted to the Seattle SuperSonics to his journey to the Met.

While talking about his Met looks, Westbrook remarked, “And it was such a great experience overall, being able to walk through the museum and understand the why you’re there, and being able to just be invited.

It was a sort of dream come true for Russ, who had been eyeing the opportunity from a distance for a long time. “Even years prior, too, I always be like, man, I wish I could go to the Met, watching the looks, watching the red carpet. I’m like, man, that looks…Though maybe one day I’ll be able to get there. And to be able to be there, it’s a surreal moment for me overall, so I’m always grateful to be there,” added the Clippers point guard.

In the same video, Russ took the opportunity to clear the air surrounding his fashion choices. Five years ago, Westbrook showed up to game day in a yellow sweatshirt with a large gaping hole exposing his chest and several small cut-up holes. This outfit garnered a satirical remark from none other than Charles Barkley. In a pre-game show against Spurs vs. Thunder, Chuck couldn’t hold back but make fun of Russ’ outfit choice. He said, “Can you show your man b–bs … he gonna dress like that? Look like a dog attack, a dog attacked it before the game. … look at Russell Westbrook!”

However, Westbrook had the perfect response to Chuck’s jibe. He clapped back by saying that fashion for him is a way to express himself, experiment with new things, and see where he gets. And the yellow sweatshirt was a result of one of his experiments. “This was a day where I was just, you know, going with whatever, but I wanted to be comfortable and cozy. I had this sweater that was like half cut up, so I decided to just cut up more and then accidentally cut the middle too much. And I just went with it and here we are,” responded Westbrook.
