Russell Westbrook's community work—Is he the real MVP off the court?

Why Not? This has been Russell Westbrook’s motto for several years. And he constantly lives up to it not only on the court, but off it as well. Sure enough, Mr. Triple Double has added another badge of honor to his mantra as he unveiled the newly expanded campus of the Westbrook Academy in South Gate, Los Angeles. As expected, his inspiring move to give back to the LA community motivated his fellow NBA peers and the entire basketball community, including Stephen Curry, Dejounte Murray and more.

In his latest Instagram post, Russ shared some wholesome moments from the ribbon cutting ceremony of the academy’s new campus and wrote, “LEGACY! Think… WHYNOT? Grateful and blessed beyond words. For the inner city. – The Brodie.” Born and raised in LA, Brodie is a beloved figure in the City of Angels and the academy is his way to make sure that every kid in the community gets the best opportunity to succeed.

“I’m LA to the core and I wanna represent LA everywhere I go. When people think of me and think of my legacy, people always talk about legacy and what that means, and to me legacy is what you leave behind not just for my family, but for the people you touch along the way and along your journey. God has helped me with this opportunity and platform to do so and I wanna help as many people as possible.” He said in an interview during the unveiling. While Russ’ Why Not? Foundation is the creator of this expansion, it might not have been possible without LA Promise Fund’s partnership. Together, they have created a state-of-the-art facility for over 400 aspiring kids from South LA. And Brodie’s move was nothing short of inspirational.
