Being a part of the Curry family brings you into the public notice more often than not. Knowing the star-studded children of Sonya Curry, mother of Stephen Curry and Seth Curry along with others, their childhood and dating rules are a topic of trend. Steph’s wife Ayesha had let the fans in on her rule of ‘no athletes’ before marrying one of the best athletes in American history. But now we get a taste of the other side.
WNBA star and LA Sparks forward Cameron Brink hosts a podcast with Steph’s sister Sydel Curry-Lee, wife of Suns guard Damion Lee. Well, on the latest edition of Straight2Cam, Sonya joins in on the fun, giving detailed (and slightly embarrassing) insights on the rules of her children’s dating lives.
“They had a rule of 16.” That was the deal breaker. If they had done the deed before, she had no knowledge. But that was what was set in stone from the ground up in the Curry household. “The day [Steph] turned 16 was when he told us about…” and then as all moms do, she forgot his first girlfriend’s name. “Whats-her-name” is what she called her. But nevertheless, it’s over the threshold, right? Well, Sydel has information that doesn’t corroborate the reported facts about the Warriors star.

Apparently, the Chef only shed light on the news of his relationship after he was 16. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t start before, right? This caused a clear tension in the room, particularly between the Curry family representatives on the podcast.

Stephen Curry’s sister Sydel refutes similarities in dating rules set by mother Sonya
Sonya had revealed that the aforementioned situation with Steph and his brother, Hornets guard Seth Curry, was to only date after 16. But when Cameron mentioned if Sydel was only allowed to date when she turned 18, Sonya went “No,” and Sydel went “Yes.” It was just Brink mentioning that with the intention of stirring the pot. But this did reveal clear differences in their love lives.
What’s your perspective on:
Is it fair for Sydel Curry to have faced stricter dating rules than her brothers?
Have an interesting take?
Bear in mind, that all of these conversations are light-hearted by nature. But it for sure gave Sydel the avenue to clear her chest and reveal bits of information that would’ve gotten them a time-out 2 decades ago. What came after was probably the tipping point though. Sonya said, “But you’re girls. So it has to be a little bit different.” Any surprise to what Cameron and Sydel’s reactions were? An immediate “NO! NO!”
The last straw was the tougher route Sydel had to take as compared to her brothers. “I had to go through more hoops to date a boy than they had to to date the girl. You didn’t have to meet the girls before they went out with him,“ to which Sonya refuted immediately. Sydel then continued saying that she only met their girlfriends after they had made their relationships public, a ‘luxury’ she didn’t have herself. Yikes.

But seeing all their relationships now, I’m sure Sonya Curry is proud of their upbringing. Seth is now married to former volleyball player Callie Rivers. Stephen Curry’s marriage with Ayesha has caught the hearts of fans worldwide. And for Sydel, she’s been happily married to Damion Lee for the past 7 years. Guess the disagreements didn’t really matter much when you look at the bigger picture, right?
