Victor Wembanyama was named the Rookie of the Year and he finished his first season with some unbelievable numbers. Seeing how the NBA world is ecstatic with the news, we can imagine his family’s joy. As he joined the Inside the NBA crew for a short chat, Charles Barkley did not fail to ask Wemby about his personal support system. Having been born in France, living in America is obviously a new experience. Heartwarmingly, the 20-year-old seemed quite proud that his family was still intact. Notably, they are still the same people that he knew growing up, and the challenging void within American society for a growing teenager and evolving family doesn’t seem to have affected them.
“They’ve done a good job not being overwhelmed by all this,” Wemby said.“But you know, the first thing is, I’m their son, their brother. And they’re still my parents, my siblings. So, I’m glad we can keep living like this, like before,” he finished with a slight smile. The Spurs knew they were getting a chance to re-awaken their dynasty when they drafted the “generational talent” since LeBron, in the 2023 NBA draft.
Although the Spurs’ season ended early and as the 14th seed in the West, it’s only a matter of time before they’ll be back as a major contender. The need to surround the promising young French phenom with the right pieces was also key to the success of the franchise.

Pop was only too aware that it was a process that takes time. But in a way, they already passed the first step. Wembanyama led the league in blocks and the rookies in points and rebounds. And he’s won the ROTY with a unanimous vote – the first time since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2016! Yet, that isn’t all there is to the man behind the player.

Victor Wembanyama is perhaps one of the most humble and honest ballers
Of course, Wemby is proud of his achievements and has no problem admitting them. But he does so with modesty that is rare in today’s world. When he talked about his experience in the States, the youngster said that America is the best country in the world for an athlete. “The culture, infrastructure, everything is just made for us to thrive… [and] I know I’m living a privileged life as an NBA player,” he admitted.
More importantly, Victor Wembanyama gave the due flowers to everyone who ensured he was his best self on the court. “There’s a lot of people taking care of me even when I don’t notice it… and America is really the only place where things like that are possible,” he pointed out. Well, Wemby is definitely happy with the league’s treatment of its players. And he credits the country for giving such importance to sport and doing everything for its advancement.
