From Ogdensburg to Lisbon to Virginia: Rick Carlisle’s journey to the NBA
What’s your perspective on:
Can Rick Carlisle's leadership finally bring the Indiana Pacers the championship glory they've been chasing?
Have an interesting take?
Carlisle was born in Ogdensburg, but raised in the small town of Lisbon, New York. His basketball journey began when he was in high school. He attended Lisbon Central High School, where he developed a passion for the game, and spent a year at Worcester Academy. After this, he went to the University of Maine and played two years of college basketball. But what was his big break?
As he was playing for Maine, an unexcepted transfer took him to the University of Virginia, and his time there is what cemented a strong base. As a starter for the 1982–83 Virginia Cavaliers team, Carlisle found himself alongside the legendary Ralph Sampson on a team that ranked No. 1 in the nation—until a shocking upset by Chaminade on December 23, 1982, shook their championship hopes.
How did this setback shape Rick Carlisle? Despite that disappointment, his determination shone through as he helped lead UVA to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament, ultimately falling to North Carolina State. The following season, he co-captained the Cavaliers to the Final Four, narrowly losing in overtime to a formidable Houston team led by Hakeem Olajuwon! Averaging 12.5 points and 3.3 rebounds, Carlisle’s collegiate career laid a solid foundation for his future in basketball, both as a player and a coach.
From a young hooper to being a teammate of Larry Bird: Making it to the NBA
After graduating in 1984, he opted for the NBA draft. Boston Celtics selected him as the 70th overall pick. He began his career by playing alongside the iconic Larry Bird. How did playing alongside the greats of the game influence his career? Well, he won the 1986 NBA championship! Under the great guidance of coach K.C. Jones, he made every shot he took in the Finals, going 3 for 3 in limited playing time. What does this say about his potential? In Celtics, he averaged 2.2 points, 1.0 assists, and 0.8 rebounds per game.
After his career with the Cs, he played for the Albany Patroons, and the New York Knicks, and ended his playing career with the New Jersey Nets. So, how did he transform into a successful head coach with such limited playing experiences?
The beginning of Rick Carlisle’s coaching career: His steps to greatness
Rick Carlisle’s coaching journey began with the franchise in which he ended his journey as a player. With the Brooklyn Nets, he took an assistant coach’s role in 1989. There he learned his first principles of coaching under Bill Fitch and Chuck Daly.
In 1997, he reunited with his former teammate Larry Bird in the Indiana Pacers, as their assistant coach. Together, the former Celtics teammates pushed the Pacers to Game 7 in the 1997-98 Eastern Conference Finals against the Bulls and to the NBA Finals in 2000. After Larry Bird stepped down, Carlisle was surprisingly overlooked for Isiah Thomas, which must have been a tough pill to swallow.
In 2001, he moved to the Detroit Pistons, where he achieved the position of head coach. While he spent only two seasons with the Pistons, he led them to consecutive 50–32 records with Central Division titles and playoff appearances. In 2002, he was named Coach of the Year. But later, the Detroit side fired him despite $2 million remaining on his contract because of tension between him and the team’s ownership and they hired Larry Brown. It’s a reminder that even successful coaches can face unexpected hurdles, right?

This led to his return to the Pacers in 2003. He led the team to an impressive 61–21 record and another Central Division title, even coaching the East All-Stars in 2004. However, injuries hit hard in 2005, with Jermaine O’Neal, Stephen Jackson, and Jamaal Tinsley being sidelined. The Ron Artest suspension also happened in the same season. Despite a valiant effort, they struggled in the following seasons.
Then came the Dallas Mavericks in 2008. Under his guidance, they not only clinched a championship in 2011 but also saw Rick Carlisle become the franchise’s winningest coach, surpassing Don Nelson.

He initiated a rebuilding phase, parting with core players and welcoming young talents like Tyrese Haliburton and Obi Toppin. Carlisle, after securing the contract extension in Oct 2023, celebrated his 900th win against the Spurs in a 152-111 victory in November. The Pacers finished the 2024 season with a 47–35 record, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals before falling to the eventual champions, Boston Celtics.
