Is the LeBron-Curry dream team the biggest 'what if' in recent NBA history?

After their multiple face-offs over the years, LeBron James and Stephen Curry finally teamed up to represent America at the Paris Olympics earlier this year. After winning the gold medal together, questions did arise if there was any chance for the two superstars to be teammates ever again. While LeBron has “no idea”, when he spoke to ESPN on Monday, his agent, Rich Paul, is growing tired of all the attention their ‘coming-together’ is getting, still.

Speaking on the podcast show, 7 PM in Brooklyn, Paul was frustrated with the question about this potential trade. He quickly focused on sidelining the query by saying, “We gotta stop, guys. Come on, man”.

As blunt as he was with his quick response to Carmelo Anthony, he further continued, “Not even paying attention to that first”.

It all started in February when rumors started spreading that the Warriors attempted to rope in James last season. Nothing materialized at the time, after Jeanie Buss, the Lakers’ governor directed the Warriors’ front office to speak with Rich Paul himself about this potential ground-shaking trade to put them both on one side.

Notably, the attempt was orchestrated by none other than Draymond Green, who pushed the Warriors’ front office to pitch this move.

Fast forward to a few months later, in April, Bron let his wishes flow to the world once again: “Steph Curry’s the one that I wanna play with for sure, in today’s game,” he said. But nothing materialized after this as well.

LeBron wishes to hope to finish his career with the Lakers, as he has professed multiple times. Both the organization and Bron have pledged to take this commitment forward, by even drafting his son, Bronny James, and Bron signing a two-year contract extension worth $104 million. Plus, Curry signed a contract extension as well, keeping him glued to the Bay Area through the 2026-27 season. So, the overall chances of Bron and Curry getting together are even more remote now, apart from their partnerships in the All-Star games.

Still, James feels appreciative of the summer they spent together as teammates in Paris. “I was super excited to be able to finally team up with him in a win-or-die type atmosphere,” James told ESPN. As part of the ‘Avengers’, the two icons of the sport led a surge alongside Kevin Durant to capture gold honors in Paris. So, for now, the fans will have to make peace with their 11-0 run in Paris.

What prevented the Stephen Curry-LeBron James link-up?

Even if LeBron had “no interest” in moving away from the Lakers, NBA insider Marc Stein claims it was Rich Paul himself who prevented Bron from teaming up with Curry. He also said that Paul was “adamantly opposed” to this trade. While this sounds somewhat true, Kenyon Martin felt that if Bron wanted to sign up with the Warriors, there would’ve been nothing stopping him from doing so.

“There’s nothing that f–king Rich Paul could have said or done if LeBron James wake up tomorrow morning and be like, ‘you know what? f–k this sh-t, I want to go to Golden State’. To be blatantly honest, I think it’s some bulls–t,” Martin said about the possibility.

Sources also said that Paul didn’t want Bron to move from Southern California to Northern California and that Paul actually implored the teams to dump this concept, even when owner-to-owner conversations were already underway (between Joe Lacob and Jeanie Buss). Paul wished to insulate Bron from yet another backlash over switching to another team for the fourth time in his career.

Now, even though the chances remain bleak, something can still possibly materialize. James could opt out after this season and decide to join Stephen Curry in what could be his final 2 years in the NBA. But would you want to see it happen? Let us know your views in the comments below.
