One week is left for the NBA trade deadline and the focus of the teams is to strengthen their squad. However, there is a 32-year-old forward who is in dire need of finding a team for this year’s campaign. Tony Snell, currently playing for the G-League team affiliated with the Boston Celtics, is looking to get signed by any team to complete his 10 years in the league. And the reason to do so is not for any personal achievements or setting a milestone but for his family.
If Snell is able to provide service to the NBA for 10 years, he will avail health benefits for his family as part of the NBA’s retirement program. And the reason he needs to avail that benefit is that his two sons Karter and Kenzo have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Upon hearing this news, a famous media personality voiced his opinion and spoke in favor of Tony Snell’s signing, but a senior NBA reporter from Yahoo Sports has given a reason as to why it is not possible.

Why Charles Barkley’s hopes to get help for Snell are not possible?
After hearing that the veteran’s 3-year-old and 2-year-old kids have been diagnosed with autism, NBA analyst Charles Barkley requested the teams on Inside the NBA. He said, “I hope one of you guys sign Tony so his two autistic kids can get great medical care. I don’t know a lot about autism but man I know it’s going to be expensive to have two young kids with that situation. So I’m hoping the NBA, we always talk about what a family we are, sign that kid for the rest of the season.”
According to Yahoo Sports, many teams have even considered signing Snell to a 10-day contract to complete his 10 seasons. However, the need for the player to be on an NBA roster for the remainder of the season by February 2nd complicates matters. According to the collective bargaining agreement, if Snell wants to avail the retirement benefits, he has to play 50% of the season’s games. Due to that, even though teams want to sign the veteran and help him out, they are unable to do so.

Even Jake Fisher, the senior reporter from Yahoo Sports, spoke about why the NBA cannot do anything for Snell. He said, “It’s like truly illegal to be circumventing the written bargained negotiated stuff. The Union could get sued by anyone.”
Fisher even further went on to say that if the NBA decides to switch up the rules of the agreement even this one time, it will open a “Pandora’s box” and would involve a lot of legalities which would further complicate the matter.
