In a controversial game, Ja Morant got tossed after committing a foul while guarding DeMar DeRozan. During the Grizzlies-Kings game, Morant’s profanity-laced outburst ignited a heated confrontation. It drew the attention of the referee and the officials ejected him on the spot with a second technical. Hence, it became another call where the officials got it wrong, as they mentioned in a statement.

When that happens, you know coach Taylor Jenkins will be fuming. Although his team won the game, he surely didn’t understand why the referees tossed him out.

“Yeah. I mean, emotional game. Not sure why. You know, it took me a lot of time to get an explanation. By that time, I don’t know what to take out from that. It took like seven or eight minutes to figure out why one of our best guys got tossed out of the game,” said Jenkins in the post-match presser, after the official decided to send Ja Morant packing.

There have been many contentious calls from the referees this year after they encouraged physical play last season. Yet Jenkins loved the passion his boys showed up after having their key man off. “But I’m proud of the group and how they responded. You know. That’s the biggest thing. We had to get to the next play,” said a cheerful Jenkins. It ended with a 115-110 win for the Grizzlies who leaped to 4th in the Western Conference table.

Despite the ejection, Ja’s performance impressed Jenkins, who was in full praise for their marquee player. “Tough as it was, Ja was trying to push through and playing with his guys. He was trying to engage himself. He couldn’t get himself going. I thought he was distributing the ball, trying to guard you know, for the other guys to step up,” mentioned Jenkins regarding Ja Morant’s influence on the team.

He continued, “You know, when a moment like that happens, it is really impressive. It could have just sidetracked and gotten distracted. Our guys were locked in,” concluded Jenkins. Yet, the referee’s statement surprised fans.

Notably, game official Pat Fraher acknowledged his mistake in a pool report to The Commercial Appeal after the game. He mentioned, “In live play the official thought that Morant bumped DeRozan on his jump shot. However, after postgame review Morant was in legal guarding position and should not have been called for a foul,” mentioned Fraher.

One situation that comes to our minds is Jayson Tatum vs Toronto Raptors. Tatum hit a game-winning shot, but the referees admitted to making a mistake by not calling out Tatum. Calls like these impact the entire franchise.

Hence, Adam Silver promised to train the referees. Hopefully, the situation records improvement moving forward. It’s imperative they get the officiating right!
