The reigning MVP, Joel Embiid, recently became an American Citizen. However, this choice has resulted in disappointment from many. Particularly for the people of Cameroon and France. Emiid was born in Cameroon, yet he holds and French and now an American passport. Giving hope to many Cameroonians and French hoops fans: come the Olympics.
Despite this, he had rejected the notion of playing for his home country much earlier. This presented a chance for a possible Victor Wembanyama and Embid Duo. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t come to fruition. Owing to that fact an NBA legend recently aired his frustration.

Tony Parker is among the best European players to grace the hardwood. Earlier this year, the four-time NBA champion was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, alongside his coach from the San Antonio Spurs?Gregg Popovich. Fellow Frenchman Victor Wembanyama has often pointed toward him as an influence in his life. Especially after his move to the Spurs, he walks on a path that Parker paved.
More recently, the former Spurs star spoke to the French media about being heartbroken by the failed prospect of the Wemby-Embiid Duo. ” He( Joel Embiid) approached us. He wanted to have a French Passport. So it’s a bit weird that he changed his mind,” said the former Finals MVP. He further added, ” I don’t know what happened. We’d have to ask the person in question, but it is really a pity to have in the paint Victor and Embiid, that would be crazy!”
The 41-year-old goes on to talk about the LeBron James-led Redeem team of 2008. According to him, it’s the best Olympic team ever assembled. Despite that combination of 7’4 Wembanyama and 7′ ft Embiid could have rivaled that Team USA roster. Much to the 6-time all-star’s disappointment, that was not to be.
However, to understand Embiid’s decision, one must learn about his roots.

The Roots of the Reigning MVP
Joel Embiid’s dream was to play volleyball in Europe until fellow native and retired NBA player, Luc Mbah Moute, spotted his potential at a basketball camp. Despite starting basketball at 15, Joel’s dedication and talent quickly turned him into a five-star recruit, leading him to join the Kansas collegiate basketball program.
The Philadelphia 76ers drafted Joel third overall in 2014, and in just nine years, he became the league’s MVP. While he’s achieved much for his team, his African roots come with expectations. Like Luc Mbah a Moute, many look up to Embiid as a beacon of hope for young Africans aspiring to play in the NBA. Yet the question remains: what would a Wemby-Embiid duo look like? Would they dominate World Basketball?
