Can the Raptors survive another injury blow, or is this the beginning of the end for their season?

The Raptors lost yet another guard ahead of the training camp behind Bruce Brown. Rookie Ja’Kobe Walter faced an injury during workouts, leaving him on the sidelines with Brown. Just like that, Toronto’s first-round 19th pick will miss his first NBA training camp.

Ja’Kobe Walter sustained a shoulder injury during an informal workout session last week. As per Keith Smith, “Ja’Kobe Walter sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder. He’ll miss training camp and his status will be updated after camp ends.”

The AC joint, short for acromioclavicular, is where the collarbone joins the scapula. And it can take anywhere from 10 days to 12 weeks, depending on the severity, to heal. Given that we will only get any updates after the Raptors‘ training camp in Montreal (October 1 to 5), all we can do is wait.

Although the Dallas native spent just one season with the Bears, Ja’Kobe made sure to leave an impression. In his debut, the young guard broke the Baylor freshman scoring record, scoring 28 points in their season-opening victory. He maintained high production throughout the year, averaging 14.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 37.6% from the floor and 34.1% from downtown per game.

With his contributions, he earned the honor of being named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year.

But as mentioned above, this leaves the Raptors missing two guards.

Have an interesting take?

Toronto’s Bruce Brown might just find himself off the floor for a considerable time

As you would have known, Brown had been suffering from a knee injury since the end of last season. And per senior NBA insider Chris Haynes, he underwent an “arthroscopic surgical procedure on his right knee” a few days ago. The re-evaluation time is three weeks. As such, we can expect a return timeline after that.

In general cases, an arthroscopic surgery takes around six weeks to heal. However, if the procedure involved the tissues, a longer period would be required for him to resume on-court activities. And now with their rookie point guard also off the lineup, Gradey Dick and Ochai Agbaji, shooting guards, have the opportunity to see some big minutes on the floor.

Considering the evaluation date and the rehabilitation period, the chance of Brown suiting up for the Raptors opening night is unlikely. But Toronto does have enough players on their roster to not be despondent – three players on two-way contracts, two players on Exhibit 10 contracts, and Jahmi’us Ramsey and Bruno Fernando on standard non-guaranteed minimum contracts.

Anyway, keep checking this space for more updates.
