Can Quin Snyder's hefty salary be justified after the Hawks' disappointing playoff performance?

Quin Snyder has been in the league for 12 seasons now, having made his way up from being an assistant coach to head coach. Throughout his 12-year NBA career, he took on nearly every coaching staff role and worked in the front offices of five different teams. Moreover, he is a familiar face for the Hawks as he had worked as an assistant coach there in the 2013-14 season, and considering his experience in the league, Snyder is one of the highest-paid head coaches.

The 57-year-old took on the job of the head coach for the Atlanta Hawks towards the end of the 2022-23 season after the franchise parted ways with Nate McMillan. According to reports, Snyder signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Hawks, positioning him as the eighth highest-paid coach in the NBA, just behind veteran coaches Mike Brown, Nick Nurse, and Doc Rivers.

Known for his willingness to experiment and his exceptional player development skills, the former Utah Jazz coach brings a valuable approach to Atlanta. Snyder’s coaching philosophy, dedication to player growth, and tactical skill significantly raised the profile of the Utah Jazz and are expected to be equally impactful for the Hawks.

While his team faced a first-round exit in the 2023 Playoffs, they failed to make the post-season in 2023-24, finishing with a disappointing 36-46 record. However, Atlanta’s start to the current season has given the fans a reason to be hopeful.

Quin Snyder’s salary fades in comparison to Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich

In 2024, Steve Kerr stands as the NBA’s highest-paid coach after signing a two-year, $35 million extension with the Golden State Warriors in February. This new deal secures him an annual salary of $17.5 million, moving him to the top of the pay scale. Previously, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich held the highest-paid title, with an annual salary of $16 million in San Antonio.

Popovich, now entering his 23rd season as head coach, is the league’s longest-tenured coach. Meanwhile, Erik Spoelstra, who has led the Miami Heat since 2008, earns $15 million per season. Known for his stability, Spoelstra has taken the Heat to six NBA Finals and secured two championships.

Ranking fourth is the Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, who earns roughly $14 million annually due to a long-term extension he signed in May. Mike Budenholzer of the Phoenix Suns and Doc Rivers of the Milwaukee Bucks are tied for fifth, each making around $10 million per season. Budenholzer has twice earned NBA Coach of the Year honors and led the Bucks to their first title in 50 years in 2021, while Rivers is set to earn $10 million each year through the 2026-27 season in Milwaukee.

Only these top six NBA coaches receive annual salaries in the eight-figure range. After that comes Philadelphia 76ers’ Nick Nurse, who misses the eight-figure range by a million dollars. And the 7th position goes to Mike Brown, the Sacramento Kings’ Head Coach, who makes $8.5 million per year. So Snyder is tied for the eighth place along with the Lakers’ JJ Redick, Dallas’ Jason Kidd, and Denver’s Michael Malone.
