Can Anthony Edwards' hunger and drive make him a legend, or is it all just hype?

Is Anthony Edwards a competitive player? If his 4 years in the league haven’t already proven that, then what else has it proven? The Timberwolves star keeps dominating and always makes it known when he does. From making D-Generation X’s ‘Suck It’ gesture during a Suns matchup to using a profanity-filled phrase against Mikal Bridges, trash talk often comes out when the player knows he possesses an advantage over his opponents. However, Edwards took a different approach, helped by a conversation with 4x champ Draymond Green, during the recent matchup against the Chicago Bulls. Instead of ‘dissing’ one player, he ‘dissed’ the fanbase!

As the Bulls-Timberwolves game was in its final 3 minutes, the Timberwolves had a significant advantage of 126-113. With the ball in Anthony Edwards’ hands, there was very little doubt that the lead would only increase. Despite Coby White doing his best to defend the 23-year-old, the latter was able to move efficiently and drop a layup while reportedly stating, “He can’t fu-king guard me.”

Later, after dropping an impressive three-pointer, he turned to the majority of Bulls fans attending the game at the United Center and kept shouting “Yeah” at them. As a result of these ‘taunts’, one might ask: What brought on this action for Anthony Edwards? The player didn’t give a definitive answer, but he did point at something that might allow fans to put two and two together.

“I don’t want to be that guy that, like, had a moment,” said Edwards when asked what compelled him to establish a more competitive drive every night. “Draymond (Green) had a great…. We had a great conversation at (Team) USA, after the championship game. At the little celebration, he was talking to me on the side, and it was just about like ‘Don’t be a moment type of guy.’ So, that’s my main goal. Like, I don’t want to be a moment where I went to the West Com (Conference) Finals one time. I want to be somebody that’s like…. ‘If we coming in, they better be ready to play.’”

Draymond Green is certainly someone who knows quite a bit about winning. After all, along with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, he secured four championship titles and played a major role in ushering in the golden era of the Warriors. At the same time, his trash-talking habits and competitive nature in itself are a story of legends. A report by ‘Last Word on Sports’ ranked him as the 9 biggest trash-talker, while Patrick Beverly revealed that Green lies somewhere alongside Kevin Durant and Luka Doncic with the verbal factor.

At the same time, however, Draymond Green is not the most perfect role model. His competitive drive has often caused him to engage in actions that have created trouble for him. His battles with Rudy Gobert over the reported DPOY titles caused a feud, a major moment of which came when the Warriors star placed the French player in a chokehold. After returning from the suspension caused due to the Gobert incident, Green received extra days of suspension after hitting Jusuf Nurkic. His ejection during a March matchup after picking up two technical fouls even brought Stephen Curry to the verge of tears.

Despite any of Green’s flaws, it is not every day that he chooses to impart knowledge to his competitors. Fortunately, he chose to do so for the 23-year-old. After all, Anthony Edwards has earned not only Green’s but his wife’s respect too.

Draymond Green once discussed his wife’s rant about Anthony Edwards’ prowess: “He just looks hungry”

Anthony Edwards and his Timberwolves squad had the spotlight on them during their playoff run last season. After defeating the Suns, they were given an equal bout of competition by the defending champions, the Denver Nuggets. Touching base upon the same, Draymond Green revealed his wife Hazel Renee’s reaction to the Timberwolves star’s performance back in May.

“I didn’t really watch, but I saw something come across that she…. she called him Anthony, like ‘Anthony had 43 points, or 40 something points’ she said. She like, ‘He had 40 SOMETHING POINTS’ and she starts going on this kind of mini rant about how like ‘how it’s hard to deny somebody that’s hungry, and he just looks hungry.’” said Green. “So, I go, I start to go down this rabbit hole, which is like he hungry as hell and he believe that he’s the best, and he wants to be the best. He knows how to play the game, and mean to play the game.”

Anthony Edwards is putting his competitive face to the forefront, and he is not without supporters when doing so. Having already determined that he doesn’t want to strike out as a one-time wonder, it remains to be seen just how far the player will go during the ongoing season.
