On July 1, 2010, LeBron James, the 2003 overall No. 1 pick drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, became an unrestricted free agent. The Miami Heat didn’t waste much time before grabbing the reigning MVP, and naturally, the Buckeye State was raging for reasons obvious—Not only did he deny signing the extension papers, which was believed to be a three-year deal, nor pick up the player option that would keep him with the team through the next season. Besides keeping the exit strategy open when he first signed the Cavs contract, Bron had made some really strong comments: “I signed a contract in 2006 with an option…I’ll let you fill in the blanks.”
Now, fast forward another four years, Bron had to undo a lot of the damage. Not just for what he had not done for his place, but really come to terms with what would be the start of his maturity curve. Yes, Miami gave him some of the best seasons in 2012–13, where he averaged 26.8 points, 7.3 assists, and 8.0 rebounds per game and he also helped his team win 27 games back-to-back, which was the second-longest streak in the NBA’s history, and of course, two championships. But it was never enough. For Bron, it became as clear as water: “My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that four years ago. I do now.”
LeBron went back to the Cavs in 2014. During his re-debut with the team, the tension in the Quicken Loans arena was thick, but the excitement was visible. James returned to a team that had Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson, but the game didn’t go their way. The New York Knicks uncharacteristically spoiled James’s return, 95-90. Things started moving like clockwork. For LeBron, yes. For his wife Savannah? Not quite.

In a new episode of Savannah’s podcast ‘Everybody’s Crazy’, she spoke about how she and her co-host, April McDaniels, became friends. It was 2007, and Mrs. James was expecting Bryce. That’s when she met McDaniels at a party in Las Vegas. “I was very pregnant going to the party and I feel like I was just like being my normal RBF self and she [McDaniels] was just taking care of me. Like we met and then she was just like, ‘You need anything? Come over here, sit right here.’ She just took care of me.”
However, they didn’t really keep in touch until they were in Miami. That’s where Savannah and April McDaniels truly connected.
“I feel like it was a different level of connection cuz you was telling me that you were thinking about moving to Miami and just the changes in your life that you were doing and while I had just moved to Miami myself from there is when we actually started to get more connected and then you came and we saw each other a few times,” Savannah shared.
The duo were even planning to throw a baby shower in Miami, but LeBron James’s move back to the Cleveland Cavaliers was en route. “And then LeBron said I’m taking my talents back to Cleveland, ‘I’m like what, no, I don’t want to go back’.”
But her husband had made a promise to the city, and being the biggest supporter of arguably the greatest basketball players of all time, his beloved accompanied him back to Cleveland.

When LeBron James fulfilled his promise to the Cleveland Cavaliers!
LeBron James’s return to the Cavaliers was bittersweet. And there’s a reason behind this. Dec. 2, 2010. That’s the day he returned to Cleveland but as a member of the Miami Heat. The tension was thick. Though James led the Heat to victory, 118-90, he was booed by the bitter Cleveland crowd every time he touched the ball.
However, his re-debut as a part of the Cavaliers was welcomed. For Cleveland, James’s return was a necessity.

The 4x champion left the ‘City of Champions’ with a promise that he would be the one to bring a title to Cleveland. And although his decision wasn’t well-received (that’s putting it mildly), the move to Miami resulted in two championships and so much experience. Finally, the ‘Akron Hammer’ felt it was time to go back to where it all started. The ultimate return of the prodigal son!
And finally, LeBron James and Co. brought home the championship that had evaded for much too long in 2016. In what was a thrilling comeback against the Warriors, the Cavs defeated the Golden State 93-89 in Game 7.
“I came back for a reason. I came back to bring a championship to our city. I knew what I was capable of doing. I knew what I learned in the last couple of years that I was gone, and when I came back, I knew I had the right ingredients and the right blueprint to help this franchise get back to a place that we’ve never been. That’s what it was all about,” LeBron James shared.
